March 2022 Ultimate Coffee Date

March 2022 Ultimate Coffee Date What’s up with that?

If we were having coffee, I would tell you…

My husband was away this week and I noticed that I was talking to myself a lot. Seriously, what’s up with that? I mean I was literally asking myself questions out loud and answering them. On the bright side, when you talk yourself, you are always right so there’s that. Please tell me some of you also talk to yourself and also answer yourself.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you…

While I was walking up the stairs with a pile of laundry, I realized I got out of breath. What is up with that? How can I run for hours at a pretty good clip and then get out of breath walking up the stairs? Please tell me there is some logical reason for this!

If we were having coffee, I would tell you…

I do some social media amplification for a nonprofit related to healthcare reform. Coincidentally, I am finding myself in one of the exact situations I’ve been researching and writing about. For my recent colonoscopy, I selected a Dr. and a center that was part of my Insurance network. Then, I  received a “surprise bill” for $2500 for the anesthesiologist who was not “in network”. I was never informed of this or consented to this. What’s up with that? Coincidentally, the Federal Government and the state of Virginia just passed a law prohibiting “surprise medical bills”.

I am wondering if this has ever happened to any of you? How did you handle it? I am going to go through a few more civil attempts to get them to drop the charges. After that, I am prepared to go full nuclear on my social media channels calling them out. I figure, if I am going to be an influencer, I may as well use my influence for good. Would love to hear your thoughts?

And now it’s your turn. If we were having, coffee what would you tell me?

About Deborah Brooks

Hi I'm Deborah! I spend my days successfully raising a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. I am a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, I've always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, I started my own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 700 members. I've met so many amazing women who inspire me daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find me running with my crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked me into. I love to keep up to date on new running & fitness trends. I definitely choose my running gear based on color and love to express my fashion sense while exercising.

Ha ha!!! I find myself talking to myself a lot, LOL. At least I have an active listener 🙂

      exactly!!

I talk to myself a lot too, especially when I’m out on a trail run. I also talk to the dog, lol

I’ve had that very medical issue happen several times and I appealed to my insurance. I had no way of knowing whether or not the anesthesiologist was in-network! I think if they are practicing at a certain hospital, then they need to be in the same networks as the hospital. Good luck and let me know what happens.

It angers me a lot that they did this without consulting me. I would not have done my procedure there had I known this. I will let you know what happens

Yikes that’s terrible about the out of network Dr. Seems very wrong to me and now I’m going to pay more attention. I’ve been very disappointed with just how little our Aetna medical insurance pays on routine stuff these days, even in network. I get bills for large portions of simple blood draws. Wth? The Caveman was away this week as well. I kind of enjoyed it! Haha!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2022 at 9:51 am

This one was on the treatment center and not the insurance company. They never disclosed that the anesthesiologist was out of network. Had I known, I would not have done my procedure there. It is just wrong! I kind of like having a few days to myself as well-don’t tell anyone 🙂

  4. Darlene says

Yes. I talk to myself a lot esp when I run alone.

Ugh. On those surprise medical bills. So far I only use in network services. Hope you get that fixed.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2022 at 9:51 am

It is annoying as I thought I was using an in network Dr

  5. Coco says

    03/04/2022 at 7:53 am

Having Scooby around means I never talk to myself exactly. 😉

That medical bill is so frustrating. I do hope you get it worked out. It’s not like the need for an anesthesiologist was a surprise, so that should have been included in the costs they told you about!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2022 at 9:52 am

Yes, exactly! I am not backing down from this one

  6. MCM Mama says

    03/04/2022 at 9:08 am

I go up and down my stairs a bajillion times a day and it always gets my heart rate up like I were sprinting. I guess that’s a good reason to carry laundry up regularly LOL.

I hate dealing with healthcare. Always trying to make sure that everything is in network is a pain. Luckily pretty much everyone at the main hospital by me is in network, so I’ve had no surprises there.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2022 at 9:53 am

Glad I am not the only one who get out of breadth going up the stairs! I thought I was using a Dr and center in network. I am not done with this one yet and plan to fight it.

  7. Erica @ Erica Finds says

    03/04/2022 at 10:51 am

    Always winded by stairs!

The surprise medical bills are SO frustrating. We had that a while ago when my husband got stitches in an ER clinic. It’s insane that they can provide care that’s not in your insurance without telling you. We fought it with the insurance company.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2022 at 5:37 pm

It is really awful that they do that yes! I am not going down easy on this one. Glad I am not the only one who gets winded on the stairs

  8. Chocolaterunsjudy says

    03/04/2022 at 11:52 am

Yes, I do talk to myself. I inherited that from my mom! So I can blame her!

Ugh, the damn unexpected medical charges and wow! That’s a lot. My husband’s colonoscopy wasn’t covered because he did the Cologuard test which indicated something might need further exam. Good luck!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2022 at 5:40 pm

It is frustrating and now actually illegal to do! I am not giving in on this one

  9. Katie says

    03/04/2022 at 12:34 pm

Call your insurance and tell them you were serviced by an out-of-network provider against your will and you need them to “reprocess the claim” (this seems to be some sort of catch phrase that “they” understand). This has happened to me 5 or 6 times and it’s worked every time, if that makes you feel better. Hopefully it’ll work for you too!

I guess this is how insurance companies make their money… off people who don’t know to or don’t bother to call, and just pay it.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2022 at 5:42 pm

thanks I have talked to my insurance company. They are saying that the clinic is at fault and that they are not responsible. I do believe the clinic is in the wrong and I plan to fight it. I am glad to hear that you were able to resolve your claim.

  10. Jenny says

    03/04/2022 at 1:16 pm

Wow- that is quite a “surprise.” SO WRONG. i hope you can get that worked out- give us an update on what happens!
Yes, I’ve heard a lot of people mention that they get winded going up stairs, even while being in marathon shape. We don’t have stairs in our house so I don’t have to deal with that : )

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2022 at 5:43 pm

Yes it is wrong and I am planning on fighting it!~ It is funny about the stairs huh!? I remember that Florida houses are usually one level.

  11. Kim G says

    03/04/2022 at 4:26 pm

I talk to myself too – sometimes in the shower, sometimes while working out. It’s how I get my best thoughts out, lol.

That is horrible about the surprise medical bill! I really hope you are able to fight it and not have to pay the bill.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2022 at 5:44 pm

Exactly on the talking to myself! Glad I am not the only one 🙂 It is horrible about the medical bill and I am going to fight it

  12. Michelle says

    03/04/2022 at 5:42 pm

Yep I talk to myself too – as Kim said, sometimes best thinking comes through.

That surprise medical bill is just all kinds of wrong! I’ve encountered a similar situation and appealed to my insurance company. I think if an anesthesiologist is practicing at a particular hospital or center that’s in my network, I should be able to assume s/he’s in-network. If not, they need to spell that out AHEAD of time. Definitely fight it!

  13. Zenaida Arroyo says

    03/04/2022 at 9:36 pm

Why can’t healthcare be easy to navigate? It is frustrating when it gets complicated like that. If a hospital is in-network then shouldn’t everyone that works there be too? I hope you get that all straighten out.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/05/2022 at 4:45 pm

I agree it should not be this complicated!

  14. Farrah says

    03/05/2022 at 6:22 pm

haha, I talk with myself a lot too (I also talk with my cat and answer for my cat…).

You were walking on an incline and carrying a lot more than you typically would than when you run! (Possibly?)

I’m so sorry to hear about your health insurance issues — they are the absolute worse. :[ I really hope it works out!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/06/2022 at 6:21 am

thanks I am determined to get it figured out!

  15. Debbie @ Deb Runs says

    03/08/2022 at 4:16 pm

This exact same thing happened to me several years ago (colonoscopy as well). I ended up NOT having to pay the anesthesiologist and I’m trying to remember the exact details, but can’t. I “think” my insurance company stepped in and said that they had a clause not allowing the gastroenterologist to do that sort of thing without informing the patient. Gosh, now that’s going to drive me nuts that I can’t remember…

Sorry to miss the linkup and will probably miss the next one, too. Life is sooo crazy for me right now.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/08/2022 at 4:47 pm

I finally got it figured out! I really think it is terrible that they try to pull this crap and most people don’t have the time or energy to get it resolved. I am feeling very proud of myself!
