Thanks for joining Kim and me for the weekly run down today. With my Ashville half less than 2 weeks away, I am ready to let my taper begin. Here is a peek into my week of fitness.
Let the taper begin
Sunday- Reston 10 Miler + stretch
I jumped into this race last minute as a training run for my half marathon. I knew it was a hilly course but was not anticipating the 68 humid degrees! It was challenging but I felt strong and I was really happy with my pace and effort. Asheville will be much flatter although I will have the 3 extra miles. I am feeling ready. Someone remind me I said that! I am ready to taper.
Monday- 3 mile walk + core + stretch
I was feeling pretty good after yesterday’s race but opted for an active rest day. I skipped the weights and the Peloton cycle today and took advantage of the 75 degree weather. I had a nice morning walk and then met some friends for a coffee walk in the afternoon.
Tuesday- 4 mile run + stretch
I had a little time crunch this morning which only allowed me to do 4 miles today. Actually, this was probably good after Sunday’s race day. Oh, did I mention we had a 35-degree temperature drop overnight and on that wind was something fierce. Just when you think it’s spring.
Wednesday- upper body + lower body strength + core + Peloton cycle
A little bit of everything today just the way I like it. I am tapering a bit on my strength training this week too. I took a short lower body class as I am trying to avoid getting sore.
Thursday- 6 mile run & stretch
Back to colder temps today! I will spare you the foot photos but I got the hugest blister on the inside of my foot today. I have been noticing that I seem to have a bunion developing. I believe this has caused my foot to rub against my shoe. Ugh, really not good timing over here! I refuse to be taken down by a blister and a bunion! On the bright side, I made a new running friend.
Friday- Upper +,lower body strength +core + stretch
Short and sweet workout today! Those 20 m core classes are all fun and games until the last 5 minutes.
My son arrived home for spring break today. So happy to have him home for a few days.
Saturday- Rest Day
I will be doing my usual stretch class. In case you missed my list of favorite Peloton stretch classes you can find them here.
Sunday- On the plan 6-8 miles
It is weird to have a “short” long run on the schedule. It’s one week until Asheville now. I will be keeping it easy peasy until then and continue my taper.
We have brunch with the grandparents and then we are trying one of those new upscale bowling spots.

Looks like a great start to your taper! Good luck with your run… I hope the foot doesn’t give you any trouble.
Deborah Brooks says
thanks me too!
Marcia says
At least your foot will heal up before race day. Sounds like you are cruising in to a fantastic race day. Enjoy the rest of your taper AND having your son at home!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks the blister is already feeling better just not good timing, Loving having my son home
Melissa says
Yay for taper!! Hope your blister heals by race day. Your ten mile medal is fun! Is that a tree ring?
Deborah Brooks says
thanks and yes a tree ring it is fun and different
Wendy says
Your training has gone so well! Hopefully, your foot won’t be an issue. Enjoy your taper this week—and enjoy your son!
Deborah Brooks says
thanks so much Wendy I hope so too
Darlene says
Bunions are no fun. Beware. I’m good now that I switched to low drop shoes with a wide toe box. No more blisters. Bad news. No more pretty Brooks.
You are going to rock that half. Can’t wait to hear how it goes.
Deborah Brooks says
I switched to a wide Brooks shoe so hopefully that will help. It is very minor so hoping I can keep it under control. And thanks I am excited for Asheville
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Yay for new running friends, but boo for bunions and blisters! It sounds like you’re ready for your half! Enjoy your week and safe travels to Asheville!
Deborah Brooks says
thanks so much Deb
Liz Dexter says
How handy to have a 10 mile race pop up before your half! I will admit I was going to try for 10 today myself but I did 2 on my own and 6 with Trudie then couldn’t be bothered. I’m not training for anything so it’s OK. Well done on a good and sensible week although bah to the blister.
Deborah Brooks says
glad to hear you are back up and running long again!
Jenny says
I have to echo Darlene and say that maybe a shoe with a wider toe box would be good for you! After your race, of course. You have had the best training cycle, and now your taper sounds perfect. Now we just have to hope for good weather on race day.
Enjoy your time with your son! I have to admit I had a little pang when I read he just came home- mine left today to go back to school. Have a great week!
Deborah Brooks says
It is so hard to let them go everytime isn’t it! 🙂
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Congrats on your race! Oh no on the blister! That is bad timing. Hopefully it’ll be healed up by your race.
75 degrees?????? Crazy talk. Although we did get to 65 last week; I spared you the Bandit bath photo. 🙂
You are ready!
What is an upscale bowling place? Never heard of that!
Deborah Brooks says
I am not ready for the 75 degree runs! the bowling place is one of those with higher end food and full bar lots of neon and automation. They have opened a few around here the last couple years. Fun for a change
Cari says
Boo on the blister and possible bunion. I love love love the hydroseal bandaids for cushioning and healing if they fit over the size of yours
I have the same or very close to your Sunday friend’s tights and they are the absolute best pattern. So much fun. Love the medal, different is always fun. You are definitely ready and going to kick butt next week.
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks Cari excited for race week but have the usual week of nerves of course
Coco says
Yay for tapering! You ARE ready! Yikes on the blister and bunion though — I hope it doesn’t get any worse.
Enjoy the time with your son and your parents.
Deborah Brooks says
Me too! Thanks
Andrea Hall says
Great way to taper! No fun on bunion formation and blister!
The signs of Spring were certainly in place last week with gorgeous budding blooms!
Hopefully you will have milder temps during the Asheville race. Enjoy the scenery, great food, and fun!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks so much Andrea 🙂
Jessie says
Oh no a bunion? Have you had one before? Hopefully no surgery! My MIL was on crutches after she had surgery on hers…I’m curious what causes them- I’ll have to google around.
Enjoy the taper and good luck at the half and enjoy Asheville! Yay to new running friends!
Deborah Brooks says
Definitely not having surgery! Thanks I am excited for this week
Michelle says
Yay for reaching taper town! You’ve had a really good training cycle – you’re ready for Asheville. And thankfully you’ve got time for that blister to heal.
Enjoy having your son home 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
thanks it is nice to have him here for a few days!
Jenn says
oooh, I’m so excited to hear about Asheville. I have never been and really want to visit. And race. I love your Reston wood slice “medal”. It’s so beautiful!
I hope you have the most wonderful time with your son.
I’m sorry about the blister Those are awful to deal with 🙁
Deborah Brooks says
thanks so much looking forward to a fun week!
Kim G says
Taper time is the best time of training, lol. I can’t wait to hear about the race and hope you enjoy your son’s visit this week!
Deborah Brooks says
I get so antsy and start to doubt everything but if you say so! 🙂
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Is your blister on the inside of the big toe? I remember last year at this time I had huge blisters on the inside of each of my big toes (both feet). It was crazy and awful! Wearing socks with toes (Injinji) were a lifesaver! I haven’t needed them since then but they were comfortable. Enjoy your family time!
Deborah Brooks says
So my blister is near the ball of my foot but towards the side where it rubbed against my shoe. No fun at all!
