Wow it’s the end of June already and this month has been a doozy! (that’s the PG version fo the word I would use to describe this month). I am jumping in on the monthly June Runfessions link up to spill all that is on my mind in my running world.
June Runfessions
I Runfess…I hate summer running
It’s no secret around here that I’ve been having a tough time running in this heat the past few weeks. I was ready to just throw the towel in last week and bail on summer running all together. You may have seen my 5 stages of summer running post that describes many of the emotions I’ve been having. Sounds like I am not the only one having a tough time of late. I am going to keep moving forward and will try to stop complaining about it.
I Runfess…I am thinking about bailing on my next tri race
I was planning on doing another sprint tri in 2 weeks. For some reason, I have not yet signed up for said tri race yet. I am loving my swim training and my long bike rides. The heat does not bother me as much on my bike and I love cycling for cross training. I am really just not enjoying the brick days and I kind of dread them each week. This sounds a little childish but here it goes: I don’t want to do the race if I am going to hate it. This may be the heat exhaustion talking here so I am going to wait another week before I decide.
I Runfess…I am embracing all the other fun summer activities
I do love summer- just not summer running. I have planned a few fun non running activities over the next week. I’ve got a kayaking date for Tuesday and a few of us signed up to do an SUP class that apparently coordinates with a live band on the shore. Should be interesting!
Thanks for listening to my June Runfessions. Other than that, all is good! What non running summer activities do you like? What do you have to Runfess this month?

Wendy says
I’ve been complaining about the heat all summer! How are we going to do RnR?
Sigh.
Deborah Brooks says
That’s why I signed up for the 10K! I knew I would not train for the half in this heat
Maureen @ Maureen Gets Real says
If you’re going to hate a race, then I don’t think you should do it. Races are supposed to be fun and if you hate it then you won’t have fun. Just my opinion though 🙂
I runfess that I am dreading my long run this afternoon..The feels like temperature is supposed to be well above 100 degrees.
Deborah Brooks says
I know the temps are just crazy be careful out there. Thanks for the thoughts on the race. I am going to wait a week and see how I feel.
Marcia says
I so feel you on how the heat sucks the life out of running. It is SO not fun when its hot the way it has been this month. All the other activities look super fun and that’s what its all about. Can’t wait to see you!
Deborah Brooks says
I am so psyched to hang out with you all in a few weeks
Coco says
Life is too short to sign up for events you don’t want to do! I’ve got to try SUP soon but I’m so hesitant to do it in the Potomac.
Deborah Brooks says
We found a place in Reston and we are going next Thursday will tell you all about it
Kim G says
You have definitely had a busy month in June – you did so much!
I think you have to go with your gut when it comes to the Tri race. If you haven’t signed up for it yet, that might be a sign. I don’t have a Fall marathon this year and it’s been great running “just to run”.
Deborah Brooks says
It is great running just to run. I am giving myself another week before deciding about the race
Cari says
Totally get you on not wanting to do it if you’re going to hate it. I’m not doing a July 4th race for that exact reason. It’s going to be too hot and sleep > miserable race.
Deborah Brooks says
I know it’s a tough decision but not having fun with it right now
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I love swimming, hiking, kayaking, and going to carnivals/amusement parks in the summer! I do love to run in the scorching heat though. I mean, I am slow and steady, but I enjoy it.
Deborah Brooks says
Slow and steady is the only way to go in this heat. Trying to embrace it
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I don’t think it’s at all childish not to want to do a race if you’re not going to enjoy it.
SUP with a band sounds like fun! I have to admit the one time I tried SUP it kind of terrified me, but most people love it.
I love to hike, but this heat wave is going to interfere with that. 🙁
Deborah Brooks says
The heat wave is interfering with everything isn’t it? The SUP can be a little scary at first I have only done it a few times. Should be fun to get back on it
Lesley says
I’m trying to figure out my schedule as well. Tuesdays are easier since I work from home and don’t commute in. How am I going to battle the heat the other days? As much as I’m an early bird, I don’t want to get up any earlier than needed before work.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes it’s tough to figure out how to manage everything in this heat.
Kelly says
I’m not a runner at all, but running in hot and humid weather just sounds like pure torture to a non runner, haha. But the kayaking looks and sounds fun to me! 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
It’s been tough going out there for sure lately
[email protected] says
I loved your stages of running in the heat post!! This reminds me I need to take the Kayaks out and wash them off. I never use them as much as I should and I live on a lake.
Deborah Brooks says
It’s funny sometimes when things are in front of you, it’s hard to find tie for them 🙂
Darlene says
Summer is arriving tomorrow and I am not looking forward to my 15K race.
I do love summer and I love being outside for tennis and boating. I want to try kayaking and try SUP again.
I now I need to run before work but it never happens.
A Tri is so hard to train for. I could never fit in brick workouts. I don’t even have time to run most days.
Deborah Brooks says
It does take lots of work to fit it all in. Good luck to you this weekend. Hope your race goes well
Nicole says
If your’e not into training for the race, definitely don’t do it!! Waste of money and waking up super early for a race (plus recovery afterward). Do what you love!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks Nicole! 🙂
Anna @ Pipers Run says
I love early morning summer running. I’ll run in the heat but early morning is where it’s at for me.
I wouldn’t sign up for that tri. Sounds like you wouldn’t really enjoy it and that’s just not fun!
Deborah Brooks says
I need to embrace my inner morning person 🙂
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I can completely understand not wanting to do a race if you’re going to be miserable – I have bailed on a race or two in my time for that very reason. That SUP class sounds like so much fun! Summer is a great time to enjoy other activities.
Deborah Brooks says
Summer is a great time to do fun other activities. I am trying to embrace that
Rachel says
No, you’re right. If you’re not going to like the race, there’s no sense in doing it. I totally get that. You do you, sister!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks friend totally appreciate that!
The Accidental Marathoner says
That doesn’t sound childish to me at all! It’s in fact very mature to recognize you don’t like something, and simply not do it!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks Linda! Appreciate that
Kimberly Hatting says
I tried to go for a short ride yesterday (en route to my stair workout), but my tires were both flat and I couldn’t find my helmet. So, that didn’t happen. I’m not much of a biker (yet), so it wasn’t totally disappointing…I was looking forward to doing something else for cross-training, though. Sorry the running is being such a downer for you right now….
Deborah Brooks says
I know things will get better I just need to adapt. I need to embrace my early morning runner girl for a few weeks I think. I love biking in the summer it’s fun cross training
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I would love to kayak or attempt SUP (which I find really scary since my balance isn’t great LOL) this summer, especially since I can’t run right now.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with not wanting to sign up for the triathlon!
I runfess that even though I hate summer running, I’m envious of everyone who’s able to go out there!
Deborah Brooks says
I know the grass is always greener! Hope you have a chance to try some new activities while you are recovering
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Summer running has been tough but I haven’t minded it too much. As long as I get out early and stay hydrated it hasn’t been too bad- but I still need to keep the pace slower than usual!
Deborah Brooks says
You are great at getting out early! I need to find my inner early bird running girl
Susie @ Suzlyfe says
We are trying to figure out how to navigate the super high temps with a baby. Sunscreen and stroller fans only do so much! But the dog has to go out, I need to go out, and she has to come with me.
Deborah Brooks says
It’s tough to manage it all especially when it’s just so hot!
Marc says
Don’t bail on your Tri! I know you’re motivated to get in the training! Give yourself some credit that the amount of work you’re doing is enough!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks Marc-sometimes I think I like the training more than the race if that makes sense
Farrah says
I feel ya on the summer running–I don’t do much running, but the bulk of the summer running I did was in California where there was no humidity (at least compared to the east coast), so it’s definitely taking some getting used to! I went kayaking earlier today too! :] Have fun with SUP!
Deborah Brooks says
The humidity makes a huge difference!
fairytales and fitness says
Summer running is definitely a double edge sword for me. I have off all summer so I definitely have time for the long runs, but in this heat I can barely get more than a 5K done..lol
Yes, there is more to summer fun than just running and you should embrace it ALL!
Deborah Brooks says
Oh I feel you on the long runs!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Running recently has been hard, that’s for certain. Hopefully we get a break in the heat and humidity sooner than later so that we can all enjoy our outdoor activities a bit more.
Deborah Brooks says
It has been tough going out there lately!
