Last Friday of the month of July already? Time to make those “Runfessions” and Confessions from this mother runner. These are always some of my favorite posts to write and read so let’s get right to those Runfessions…
July Runfessions and Confessions from this mother runner
I Runfess…I have not run at all this week and lived to tell about it.
My achilles area has been tight for a few weeks now and after last weekend’s RnR Races it was not so happy with me. My trainer and I “agreed” that I should take a full week off of running and allow it to heal. (insert panicked face). Surprisingly, I have made it through by keeping myself busy with other workouts. The crappy weather helped as well. We shall see how it feels on Sunday.
I Runfess…I may have some struggles getting in my runs the next week or so.
I am jetting off to Vegas next week for a friend’s birthday celebration. I was prepared to get up at 0 Dark Thirty to run there until I saw that it’s a balmy 95 at 6 am. Yikes! No thanks on that one. Thankfully, our hotel has a great gym with lots of classes I can do. Not sure I will be desperate enough to treadmill.
I Runfess…I am rethinking my current diet (in a broader sense).
I can’t really believe I am saying this but I am thinking that I may need to switch up my vegetarian diet a bit. Lately, I feel as though I need more protein and I am having a hard time getting it. I am thinking about adding in some minimal amounts of fish to my diet. Would I then have to call myself a pescatarian? I feel like some sort of traitor to the vegetarian world ha ha. Silly problems I worry about.
I Runfess…I am freaking out about how fast time is ticking by.
Both of my kids will be heading back to college in a mere 2 1/2 weeks. Not sure I am quite ready to let them go. How do you think they would feel if I went with them? Ha ha wouldn’t that be something?!
That’s my July Runfessions and Confessions. Any thoughts on adding fish into my diet? How unbelievably hot does Vegas sound?

Wow Vegas sounds really hot! I would probably opt for the treadmill, although I would be tempted to run outside just to do some exploring!
Deborah Brooks says
I am still hoping they have an unexpected cold wave!
Maureen @ Maureen Gets Real says
Maybe two weeks off for your achilles will be the way to go. Those Vegas temperatures are crazy!! How cool that your hotel has classes you can take though.
As far as fish goes, I’m not a big seafood person so to me that doesn’t sound very appealing. You could always try for a month and see how you feel though!
Deborah Brooks says
I am hoping the time off of running will help!
Rachel says
I think adding fish to your diet is a great idea. If your body is asking for protein, it probably does need protein! Maybe switch to calling your diet “plant based” — which it will be if you’re still basing your meals on vegetables and just adding fish or even a little bit of chicken if you’re feeling spicy! The thing I love about labeling your diet “plant based” is that, even though that’s been associated with the vegan diet in the past, to me it means that your meals are based around your vegetables. Can’t go wrong with that!
Have a great weekend!!
Deborah Brooks says
Chicken is what made me a vegetarian in the first place so definitely no on that. I think I can do the fish though we shall see
Marcia says
That’s the nice thing about Vegas. The hotel gyms are fabulous. I wouldn’t even try to run in that heat…even though “it’s a dry heat” Haha! Resting up that achilles was smart. I hope it calms down for you ASAP. Omg I feel you on the college thing….and I’ve still got a year. Maybe it won’t be so bad when the time comes. Yeah right.
Deborah Brooks says
If you say so!
Kimberly Hatting says
Vegas is hot (but it’s a dry heat LOL). I couldn’t believe how thirsty I felt when I was there in November for the R’n’R…but, then again, I also was attempting to run 13.1 miles after a long day of walking.
Deborah Brooks says
I always feel so thirsty there and my skin gets very dry. Have to drink even more for sure
Wendy says
We’re at college orientation and they showed that cartoon to the parents. LOL! That will totally be me.
I’m over the heat–that Vegas forecast looks hot! But…it’s a dry heat… right? I didn’t run when we were in Vegas. The logistics of all those stairs and bridges on the strip kind of threw me off…
Have fun!
Deborah Brooks says
It is really challenging to navigate the streets and the people there!
Darlene says
It’s dry heat, right? Easier to run in than the East Coast humidity.
Deborah Brooks says
That’s what the say! I am not convinced though
Kim G says
I hope that the time off running this week will help. Sometimes a little R and R is all we need to come back running stronger than ever.
umm…that Las Vegas heat is no joke! I can’t believe it will be almost 100 degrees at 6am?! That’s great that your hotel has a gym with a lot of options!
Deborah Brooks says
I seriously do not know how people deal with such heat like that all the time!
Susie @ Suzlyfe says
OMG that cartoon is hilarious. I can’t believe schools (all schools) are almost back in session! Summer just gets shorter every year. I hope your achilles is feeling better–that can be a tough nut to crack, and good for you for taking the week off!
HoHo Runs says
I haven’t run all week either. We’re both alive! The college cartoon is sadly very true. And, we’ll both make it through that as well. Vegas sounds fun regardless of the temp.
Deborah Brooks says
Taking a few days off is good sometimes especially in the heat. Yes we will make it through but it is not going to be easy
[email protected] says
I hope your injury feels better! Great job taking a week off it though!
Man that’s hot in Vegas! I’d stick in doors as well!
My mom was always a vegetarian but had to add in meat to get her iron up. Nothing else worked and she got awful headaches. She felt odd doing it but got used to it
Deborah Brooks says
I don’t see me ever eating meat but fish could work.
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
Vegas is way too hot in the summer. I would have to use the treadmill there. I tried to go vegetarian before and I felt like I was’t getting enough protein either, but once I started to ad fish and seafood I felt a lot better. You will never know unless you try.
Deborah Brooks says
I have been a vegetarian since I was 12 so it is odd to think about changing things up but it’s worth a try
Lesley says
I’d opt for the treadmill when it’s that hot out. I never got up early to pound miles outside in Texas. It never really had any advantage to me, and I made peace with the treadmill very quickly. It’s hot with the sun, and hot without the sun.
Deborah Brooks says
I may have to log in some tread mill miles!
Hannah says
I hope the time off helps your achilles! About Vegas – people say “it’s a dry heat”, but that means you will dehydrate SO much faster. When I lived in Nevada I couldn’t run more than 3 miles in the summer without carrying water – that was northern NV, in Vegas I think I would basically have to be drinking water constantly for the whole run. I think you’re smart to stick to the gym classes.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I agree way too hot for me!
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Hahah that cartoon picture is EXACTLY what my mom when through when I went to college.
I runfess that I have not been handling my injury very well.
Deborah Brooks says
Injuries are never easy to deal with. Hang in!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
That dry heat makes a HUGE difference. It was high 90s to triple digits in Boise the entire time I was there — although the mornings were cooler than Vegas (and I have been to Vegas in the summer, but I hadn’t started running yet). It’s really cool to run down to the Vegas sign (depends where you’re staying, of course.
Although I eat everything, I lean vegetarian. I still find it hard to get in enough protein, and that’s with eating fish, some poultry & red meat once a week (because Mr. Judy loves to grill it).
I can’t really said it’s made a difference one way or another when I’m eating more vegetarian or getting in more animal protein.
I used to take a week off of running after a half, pre-Rachel. This time I really couldn’t, because I have my 18 mile race to train for. My runs this week went pretty well, but other than some DOMs, I wasn’t dealing with anything — but man, I’m am sooooooo tired this week, despite enough sleep. I blame going from that super low humidity to our current ugliness.
Deborah Brooks says
I still think it will be too hot to run but maybe a walk to the Vegas sign will be doable.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
You gotta get out early — otherwise it’s definitely too hot!
Deborah Brooks says
I am so not an early bird but perhaps the time change will help!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I hope the rest has done your achilles some good – I haven’t run at all this week either. My goodness, Vegas sounds hot! Perhaps a second week of non-running and classes instead is in order!
Deborah Brooks says
I hope the time off this week does us both some good!
Laurie says
How long did it take to take the bench planking picture? That is awesome! Have fun in Vegas, baby!
Deborah Brooks says
surprisingly quick!! LOl My running buddies are very into the photo ops as well 🙂
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I hope your achilles calms down! Wear good shoes if you end up walking a lot in Vegas. I remember when we went to Vegas I wore cute sandals and REGRETTED IT.
I see back to school signs and the Halloween store has opened. I’m not ready!!!
Deborah Brooks says
I agree-the cute sandals do not work for me anymore. I find Birkenstocks super comfy bc they have lots of arch support
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
That cartoon! I was okay when we dropped our oldest son off at college because I still had a child at home. When we dropped our youngest off, I lost it, and he was hugging me and patting me on the back and telling me it would be okay. LOL And then it took about one day for me to love being an empty nester. 🙂
Have fun in Vegas! That’s crazy hot so be careful.
Deborah Brooks says
Well I know who to come to if I need some comforting!
Natalie says
Vegas is SO HOT this time of year! Rest that achilles my friend and don’t stress about running in that crazy heat (rest the achilles!) – take a class and a spa day instead 🙂
Yes to adding fish to your diet! I love fish, so I’ll always say yes to that – I think you’ll love it.
Deborah Brooks says
Surprisingly, I have been ok with not running this week. The crappy weather really helped 🙂 I am looking forward to taking some of the fun classes they have at the hotel and maybe swimming too.
The Accidental Marathoner says
I’ve run early mornings on the Las Vegas Strip but never with temps that high. It’s actually pretty fun as long as you are out there by 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. There are just a few people walking around but it’s otherwise pretty quiet. Enjoy your trip. It’s one of my favorite places.
Deborah Brooks says
I hope I can get out at least for a short run before it’s too hot
Shathiso says
I remember my parents hated it when I left for university especially as I was going so far. But I think they soon started enjoying the new phase of their lives! I remember the first holiday I visited I was so shocked to find that they had a life! Things didn’t revolve around me anymore and I slowly had to adjust to that too! Lol.
Deborah Brooks says
ha that is definitely another perspective! Thanks for sharing. My hubs and I have a few adventures planned over the next few months
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
I’ve always wondered about vegetarians/vegans and protein. I feel like it would be hard to get protein without eating meat. I mean, I know some vegetables have protein in them, but meat generally has so much more I feel like you would have to eat double the veggies to even get the same as one helping of like chicken or something. If you’re comfortable experimenting, why not try the fish route and see how that works?
Las Vegas is a dry heat so it’s probably less intense than Florida. Right now we are at 90 plus percent humidity in the morning, which makes it a sauna when we run. I’m not sure how I’d feel about the heat in Vegas but at this point anything without humidity sounds great!
Deborah Brooks says
We are really suffering with the intense humidity here in the DC area as well right now.Seems like we either have a thunder storm or crazy intense heat. Where is fall?
Cari says
I was in Vegas this time two years ago and I found the weather bizarre. One day it was an oven and the other it was overcast and actually pleasant since it wasn’t at all humid. I wasn’t running at the time, but it was perfectly fine for a brisk walk down to the Welcome to Las Vegas sign. Have fun!
Good luck with the diet adjustments. I feel that we as a society over complicate things by labeling them and then worrying if we live up to that label. So frustrating
Deborah Brooks says
I am hoping for a little Vegas heat wave!
