January Ultimate Coffee Date
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…
I am not a New Year’s Resolution person. The holidays are so stressful and I am always kind of glad when they are done and I can get back to my normal routine. While I do not make resolutions, I do like to weekly set mini goals for myself throughout the year. Sometimes they are larger goals like running x number of miles or making it to yoga classes x number of times. Some weeks, they are smaller goals like stretching more often.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…
It was so nice to relax and veg out with the family in Aruba over the holidays. It’s been our family tradition the last few years. This year, it came at the perfect time! Love having the kids home from school and all to myself for a few weeks. It’s super fun when your kids are old enough to share a bottle of wine with!
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…
On a whim I decided to sign up for an adult Bat Mitzvah class at our temple. I have never been a religious person and I still don’t think I am. I never had a Bat Mitzvah as a child at 13 but the rest of my family did. I happen to hear about a class offered and decided to just say yes. I think it will be a really interesting opportunity not only to learn more about my faith but also to meet some new people along the way. It is a year long process but it starts next week! Excited and nervous at the same time. Totally way out of my comfort zone!
Well, that is about it for now! If we were having the ultimate coffee date today, what would you tell me?

I’m not much of a New Year’s Resolutions person either–I just always have ongoing goals, haha. I’m glad you got to relax with your family over the holidays!
Thanks it was just perfect!
I don’t really do New Years resolutions either, mini goals all year is were it is at for me! Your Aruba trip looked awesome.
It was really nice thanks!
Congrats on the decision to have a Bat Mitzvah! Will you be having a big party after? :p Seriously tho, I think it’s great that you want to explore more about your faith.
Happy New year!
Well the party idea may have helped to convince me!
I love that New Year’s meme! You ARE fabulous! I’m jealous of your family vacay! That adult Bat Mitzvah class sounds really interesting. Happy New Year!
I am really excited to see how it goes!
That’s interesting about the Bat Mitzvah class! I didn’t know you could experience that as an adult. My best friend from college is Jewish, so I have learned so much about Judaism form her, but that has never come up in conversation 😉 . Your family trip looked like so much fun. A few years ago, when we all went to the Rose Bowl, our oldest was able to enjoy the vineyards with us in Napa Valley LOL
I actually never thought about the Bat Mitzvah class either until I saw something about it a few weeks ago. Just felt like the right time for me. Stay tuned for details
I have a friend who did the Bat Mitzvah thing as an adult. Have fun with it! Your trip looks all kinds of wonderful!
I am excited to see how it goes!
Congrats on the Bat Mitzvah class. That is exciting! Sometimes we just need to follow our gut and do what we feel like doing, even though we may not know why. I am usually not a resolution person either, but I have decided to focus on a word this year – balance. I don’t know why, but it just came to me one day. Happy New Year!
Yes for going with your gut sometimes. I am trying to get more comfortable with that. Balance was my word last year-it’s a good one. I have not really come up with one for this year yet
Mazel Tov (on both the class & the vacation). My SIL had a Bat Mitzvah she actually shared with her daughter, since she also didn’t have one as a kid. I did, my sister didn’t — both by choice.
It’s very different now, though, in my day girls didn’t actually read from the Torah (although I still had to learn a section) and didn’t get a talit, either.
Good for you!
That’s a special thing for your sister to have shared with her daughter. I am the only one in our family that has not had one. It’s my challenge for this year
Your dress is so cute!
Funny re: s haring a bottle of wine with your kids – we went to the Bahamas when I was ~18. Used to sharing sip of parents’ drink but was in awe I could order a non Virgin drink.
Great idea re: adult bat mitzvah.
I’m not religious at all but love reading & learning about different faiths.
If you enjoy reading non-fiction, https://www.amazon.com/My-Jesus-Year-Rabbis-Wanders-ebook/dp/B001JI3R8O was a great one I read a couple of years ago.
Thanks I will check out the book. Not sure whee this journey will take me
sometimes I feel like those are the best kind of journeys
Yes they sure can be!
That’s really cool about your Bat Mitzvah class! I didn’t have one either but my brothers did. I was always jealous of my friends who went to Hebrew School. I’m so weird – LOL.
I’m happy to get back to routines, too! I enjoy the holidays but it gets to be A LOT by the end of the month.
Happy New Year! Thanks for hosting!
It should be a really interesting experience!
I don’t do resolutions but do like to set goals throughout the year – helps keep me on track.
The adult Bat Mitzvah class sounds really interesting. I applaud you for stepping out of your comfort zone. I hope you’ll update on how it goes throughout the year.
Happy New Year Deborah 🙂
It’s way out of my comfort zone! I will keep you posted for sure
I don’t usually set New Year’s resolution either, but this year I did set a goal to send my mom a hand written letter at least once a month. I call and text her several times a week, but I think she’ll really like the old-school letters.
Thanks for the linkup!
I love that and I think it’s super sweet!
Well it sounds like most of us don’t make resolutions. Here’s to bucking the system! I think it would be really cool to re-investigate my religion at this age. I’ve always said that we are brainwashed into what we believe. It will be an interesting journey for you this year!
It will be an interesting journey!
I’m also not a resolution person. I am about goals as well. Goals make sense to me, both short and long-term goals.
Looks like you had an awesome time in Aruba! Sure it was nice to have the family all together.
It was so nice to have everyone together even if just for a few weeks! Happy New year to you
i’m so glad you all had such a great time in Aruba! And while my step-kids are a bit younger than yours, it is SO NICE to spend time with them as adults.
I tend to also make weekly or monthly goals, but this year I decided that I wanted to focus on the whole year! In November I already started talking to my running coach about how to set up 2019. And I’m going to be using him as a personal trainer as well – I mean it costs more per month but I get a couple sessions plus all the trainings included (2x a week with the group, 1 long run, and my extras also planned out for me in TrainingPeaks). I am simply done with being only 80% (even though some of that is the fault of my foot and the nerve damage) and I’m just going for it this year.
So interesting about the Bat Mitzfah class! I think it’s awesome that you are doing that! Was there a reason you hadn’t done it when you were 13? Or is that too personal a question? My best friend in Chicago actually converted to Judaism I think now 20 years ago and she had to do a LOT to do so and I believe it also took a year to get through. I respect that people respectfully want to dive into and understand their faith and religion more. I am not religious but I can appreciate faith and the traditions that also come with faith.
I am a big fan of personal trainers-have had the same one for 14 years! Really keeps me on track with strength training and aging (lol). Hope that your new trainer helps you just as much. I really don’t remember why I did not have a bat mitzvah at 13 except that we moved right around that time and I think I kind of rebelled. stay tuned for details on how it’s going! Thanks for the support
I LOVE that coffee cup! That’s one of my favorite quotes! 🙂
Aruba sounds so wonderful!! What a fun tradition to have!!
Have a great weekend, Deborah!
It’s a great quote isn’t it!? Thanks we really did have a wonderful time with our kids in Aruba.
The adult Bat Mitzvah class sounds really interesting!
I think it will be!
