6 Tips and tricks to out run the seasonal flu
It might only be September but it’s never too early to start thinking about cold and flu prevention. As soon as the kids go back to school, it seems like germs and viruses are everywhere. While we can’t fully prevent colds and the flu, there are some things you can do to protect yourself. Here are some of my tried and true tips to Out Run The Flu.
-
Get More Sleep- Poor sleep habits have been said to have an adverse affect on your immune system leaving you more susceptible to illness.
-
Get the Flu shot- According to the CDC the “single best way to protect yourself against the flu is to get vaccinated every year”. (source) I have already gotten my vaccine this year-how about you?
-
Exercise- Numerous studies show that those who exercise regularly have less cold & flu symptoms. (source)
-
Replace your toothbrush often- Those babies can really harbor tons of germs. Replace them regularly and whenever you have been sick.
-
Disinfect- We all know it’s important to wash your hands often but do you disinfect your phone? We constantly have our phones out and often put them down on sinks in bathrooms or tables in restaurants. Disinfecting your phone often can help keep those germs from getting to your face.
-
Eat your vitamins & stay hydrated-Eating lots of fruits & veggies helps to get all those vitamins in naturally.
How do you out run the seasonal flu? What are your tips to staying healthy all season long?

I would be interested in Zarbees. I use Emergen-C during the winter. You raise some very good points, although I must admit I avoid the flu shot. It is also a very fine balance of exercise versus overtraining so I’m very cautious during the winter months to dial back a workout or take a rest day if I’m feeling particularly sluggish.
Deborah Brooks says
It is always a balance for sure. These are similar to emergen-c but all the ingredients are natural. I am really liking them
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
I could feel myself staring to get a bit icky yesterday (my allergies are really acting up). That is a great tip about the toothbrush! But most importantly, I need to get some more Zarbees in my life 😀
Deborah Brooks says
My allergies are bothering me too. Hopefully they will be over soon
Amanda (@mommygorun) says
It does seem that the higher my mileage, the more likely I am to get sick. But as a working mom with busy kids, I don’t have time to let a cold or other illness knock me out. It sounds kind of silly, but I like to drink my vitamins so I will mix up a drink with loads of vitamins. I also try to make sure I get enough sleep…as if there is any such thing as enough!
Deborah Brooks says
Doesn’t sound silly to me I totally get it! Thanks for stopping in
Annmarie says

Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
I do most of these because I’ve had so may problems with being sick in my life. They all help. I am currently wiping down my phone because I hadn’t thought about it… ewwwww….
Deborah Brooks says
LOL it’s really kind of gross when you think about it :0
lindsey says
I was feeling the effects of a couple days of poor sleep this past week – miserable! I had a good run on Saturday and Sunday morning and I am surely catching up on some needed zzzzzzs 🙂

I’d love to try Zanbees! Definitely a great addition to a preventative health routine. I try to get better sleep in the winter, stay warm and bundled, and of course get my flu shot – although I haven’t done so this year 🙁 Need to get on that ASAP!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes for sure!!
Marcia says
I hope this is not a bad flu year! I love Zarbee’s so much, I have a hard time limiting myself to just one drink a day. So tasty!
Deborah Brooks says
They really are so good!
Jen @ Pretty Little Grub says
This is usually the time of year I get sick so I’ve been working hard to make sure I dont get sick especially before my vacation. I’ve been hand sanitizing like crazy and taking some Emergen C.
Deborah Brooks says
Zarbees is similar except that all the ingredients are natural. Check it out next time you are at Target
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
I’m all about the flu shot and exercise. I definitely need to start disinfecting my phone, too! Thanks for the tips!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes the phone is really a germ collector!

With my Epstien Barr I am always more likely to catch a cold then others. So keeping up on good sleeping habits and getting in the vitamins is a must.
I haven’t tried this brand before, I think the first time I heard of it was on your blog if I remember a while back you talked about it. I really should look into this stuff and give it a try for upcoming winter!
Deborah Brooks says
I really like how natural they are. Check it out next time you are in Target
DJ says
I would love to try the Mulit-vitamin with Antioxidants. I hope it will help boost my immune system since I suffer from seasonal allergies.
Deborah Brooks says
My allergies have been bad too hope they go away soon!
Heather@hungryforbalance says
During cold and flu season, I try to be extra diligent about everything you mentioned: extra sleep, lots of fruits and vegetables, disinfecting EVERYTHING, but I never think to replace my toothbrush! Thanks for the tip!
I would love to Zarbees. It sounds like a great product!
Deborah Brooks says
Ah yes the toothbrush very important!! Zarbess are great I am really enjoying them
Heather says
I think that eating right, exercising, and sleep are very important for every day living. People rely too much on a vaccination and expect that to keep them safe, when in reality if you are not doing anything else to build up your immune system you are still going to get sick. Everything in moderation. Thanks for the information

Good points too!

Everyone has to get a flu shot, super important! You cannot get enough sleep or wash your hands enough 🙂 All great tips! Amazing what hydration will do for you to. I think it is funny during flu season they don’t encourage shaking hands at church! I would love a sample! Send a little multi-vitamin action my way!
Deborah Brooks says
Totally agree Mary Beth!
courtney @ eat pray run dc says
i actually don’t get the flu shot. i know, i know. but i’m pretty anal about hand washing and cleanliness and i think that really helps me!
Deborah Brooks says
Let’s hope! Stay healthy friend ?
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I love that you said to get the flu shot!!! I get so much push back on this at work, and I can’t argue with people…altho their reasons for not getting it are crazy. “I don’t believe it the flu shot”…as if it were a religion! Even if it is a bad match (like last year), getting it every year gives you some cummulative immunity over any strain…
Deborah Brooks says
I totally agree doesn’t make sense to me but I guess it’s too political to get into on here!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
I always focus on trying to sweat out my germs, though if I feel myself coming down with something I also know that extra rest is necessary too.
Deborah Brooks says
Absolutely extra rest helps!
Sharon says
Great tips! I agree with the exercise and sleep. Thanks for the reminder to disinfect my phone!
Deborah Brooks says
LOL no problem!

I would love to try Zarbee’s! I get my flu shot every year! And whenever there is a threat I start using my essential oils like crazy!

I prefer natural products…always seems like meds sometimes make me feel worse than before
Deborah Brooks says
Exactly! Thanks for stopping in!

I try to remember hand washing as much as possible, even for my kids. Pumping up on nutrition is definitely important to me during this season. I like that Zarbees are natural, I would try them.
Deborah Brooks says
I love the natural aspect. Sometimes I just need a little boost and I am really liking them
jennifer f says
Ugh, we got the flu on Christmas Eve last year . . .. . stocking up on Zarbees this year to make sure that doesn’t happen again!
Deborah Brooks says
Oh no that’s not good!
Jess @hellotofit says
Nice post, Deborah! I get the flu shot every year…doesn’t guarantee that I’ll be flu-free, but I’m around SO many people at the gym that I can’t afford to not get it.
Deborah Brooks says
I know the gym is so germy isn’t it?!
Ashley Sears says
These are great tips with cold and flu seasons right around the corner! Definitely don’t like not feeling my best during the colder months!
Deborah Brooks says
You and me both!
Toni says
I do everything you suggested, as a nurse I think the best way to outrun the flu is to wash your hands frequently!!! I have to try Zarbees!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes so important! You do have to try Zarbee’s 🙂
Chastity says
I hope you feel better soon! Hopefully that vitamin packed Zarbee’s will help you in your recovery.
Deborah Brooks says
I am feeling much better this week thanks!
Karen says
I noticed that they just installed a hand sanitizer dispenser outside the door of my exercise class. I now make sure I use it EVERY SINGLE TIME. I know people wipe things off but lets face it, they often don’t do a great job. This way I know I’m not bringing home any germs with me from the gym!
Deborah Brooks says
oh exactly! Gyms are quite the petri dish of germs.
Deborah Brooks says
Hi Karen-you won the Zarbee’s samples! I will get them to you next week hope you like them!
Karen says
Yay!! Thanks!!
rachel says
Great tips! I will have to trY Zarbees… my boys love to share their yucky germs!
Deborah Brooks says
Oh all kids do! Stay healthy friend
GiGi Eats says
Sadly cannot consume these thanks to the coconut sugar! I got so excited when I got the package in the mail and then my heart sank – WOMP WOMP! But… I gave them away to my friends, because I do in fact care about their health/wellbeing too! 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Oh too bad I really am enjoying them a lot
Lara says
I do or try to do (get plenty of sleep) all of these except get the flu shot. When I interned at a hospital in Jacksonville they made me get the flu shot and that has been the only year that I have ever gotten the flu. I don’t know if it’s just a coincidence or not, but since then I haven’t gotten the flu shot and I’ve been flu free 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Sleep and hand washing is the key for sure!
Kristi L says
I try to out run the flu by getting plenty of rest and making sure to wash my hands frequently. Working with kids can get pretty germy so sanitizer is a friend too.
Deborah Brooks says
oh yeah those kids are very germy aren’t they?!
Chynna from Beauty & Living says
I absolutely love Zarbee’s and I love that my husband does too. So natural, great for us, and DELICIOUS! My husband loves them before his morning workouts and I love them to just help make me feel amazing throughout the day. I can definitely tell the difference when I’ve had some Zarbee’s. Mixed berry with honey and the honey apple cranberry antioxidant/multivitamin drink mixes are my favorites!!! Enjoy and stay well!!! Never though about replacing tooth brush after being sick! Is that gross? Haha. Will definitely start now! 😛
Deborah Brooks says
OH yes the toothbrush change is a must!
rika says
The perfect vitamin drink for busy people
Deborah Brooks says
Absolutely! Hope you enjoy
Lynda@fitnessmomwinecountry says
We have been so lucky the past few years. Flu has been staying away from the kids, however I got it bad last season. Hopefully that means I am good to go for this year. I disinfect everywhere and I have a habit of wiping down all door handles every other day {every time after we have company} and all the bathrooms. I am a bit OCD about that and Lysol and Clorox are my favorite brands to keep in the house.
These Zarbee’s Naturals are awesome, I am loading myself up with the Immune System.
Deborah Brooks says
Well I guess I am a little OCD too bc I do all the same things!
