Finally figuring out how to create custom run workouts on Garmin Connect has been a game changer for me. Have you struggled to follow a run workout only to be frustrated because you could not keep track? If you have a Garmin watch, using the Garmin Connect app to set up your own personalized workouts will help you crush your next interval sesh.

How to create custom workouts on Garmin Connect

Running is hard. Running math is even harder. Save yourself the frustration and confusion of trying to keep track of intervals. Create your own workouts and send them right to your watch.

What kind of running workouts can I create?

From the Garmin Connect app, you can create customized workouts based on time or distance. You can also set a pace range and your watch will alert you when you venture outside of those parameters. It is easy to add warm-ups and cool-downs as well. Does your workout have repeats? No problem! Set those up as well.

How to send them to your device

You can easily send your personalized workout right to your watch. Once you have created and saved your workouts, click on send to device, Then, sync your watch with the app and you should be good to go. You can also preview the workout on your watch to make sure it all looks good, I am currently running on a Garmin Fenix 6 like this one. (amazon affiliate link)

Updating workouts from week to week

There is no need to reinvent the wheel as they say. Simply go into a workout and edit it to reflect the next week’s session. Again, save it and send it to your watch.

Scheduling your workouts in advance is a huge time saver and an excellent way to make sure that you hit your intervals correctly. After you complete your workout, you can find all of your stats on your phone app under that day’s run. From there, you have the ability to share it with anyone or screenshot it, etc.

    This is great info, Deborah!
Creating my own workouts has been an absolute game-changer for me too. I could never do my speed repeats on the track or hill repeats without the Garmin bleeping its instructions.

I agree they are really essential to pulling off the speed workouts

It definitely helps to program workouts, but I’ve been known to mess them up and throw off my whole workout! I use Coros now but its similar to set up a workout in the app. For the athletes I coach that use Garmin the workouts I schedule into VDOT automatically sync to their watch, which is really nice- they don’t need to go through the trouble of entering it in!

      That is really helpful!

Yes yes. I think it’s helpful.

But I have to sit down and figure it out.

I have been running intervals for long runs using my friends watch cues.

    Thanks for the push.

When I started doing different types of workouts this year, I was pushed to figure out the easiest way to get them done correctly

I just have the basic Garmin Forerunner 35, but it has the ability to program intervals. i use it for that all the time! No need to leave it to chance, that’s for sure!

Exactly! I don’t like to have to think about it in addition to actually running 🙂

I will have to try this. I didn’t realize you could do it on the app!

I find it much easier to do on my laptop and then just send it over. I then update it each week from there

Yes, yes, I need this post! I know my Garmin can do this but I’ve never tried to figure it out. I’m expending way too much mental energy during my workouts- thanks for the great info.

Well this is perfect timing! My new Garmin has me scratching my head & I haven’t (yet) downloaded the app (my bad), so this is the push I needed 🙂 Thanks for the info & inspiration!!!

For the longest time I didn’t even really realize you could do this! I must confess I don’t usually use this feature — but then, It’s been a really long time since I’ve actually seriously trained for anything. So thanks tor the tutorial, Deborah!

Thanks for the tutorial! My Garmin is far smarter than I am so I’ve never used that feature. LOL I do load my Ride with GPS routes onto my bike Garmin so I know where to turn, etc.

I still don’t know how to use half of the features!
