I thought it would be fun to give this Friday Five link up a try!
5 Fitness Goals:
1-Discipline: I’m trying to be very disciplined as I come back to running after my stress fracture in late January. I’m back up to 3 pain free miles and I am so happy to be out with my Moms Run This Town group again. I missed them so much! It’s tempting to jump back in and do too much and risk re-injury. There are so many races and it is hard not to get swept up into doing too much.
2--Yoga I started doing some hot yoga while recovering from the stress fracture. I’ve learned a few things: I’m really not very good at yoga and that’s ok. It’s way out of my “comfort zone” and I like the challenge.I really enjoy it and I think it is a great compliment for running. I love how I feel when I walk out of there. My goal is to keep it up as I ease back into running more often.
3- Cross training– I plan to keep up my cross training as I go back to running more. I believe this will help me stay injury free. I already do strength training 2-3x per week including kick boxing. I especially like spinning and outdoor cycling. I plan to do the Reston Century Bike Ride in August https://restonbicycleclub.wildapricot.org/
4-Nutrition– As a lifelong Vegetarian, I believe I have pretty good “diet” 90% of the time. There are a few tweaks I’d like to make. I’d like to cut out some of the sugar from my diet. This is a lot harder than I thought it would be. Everything has sugar in it! Confession I may also have a hidden stash of Hershey Kisses in the house. I have also become aware of the fact that I eat too many processed foods and I am trying to find homemade alternatives for some of my staples. More on that in upcoming posts.
I’m currently participating in the #SpringReset challenge on my friend Meagan’s site, http://www.thelyonsshare.org/ this has helped me realize some of the above.
It’s so easy to make and eat healthy nutritious food and I feel much better when I do.
5- Family I’d really like to find a way to encourage my family to be a little more active perhaps participate in some of my fitness activities with me. I know that everyone is busy with their own activities and work. I am fortunate enough to have time to exercise daily. I’m hoping some of my crazy behavior will rub off on them.
What fitness goals do you have?
Is there anything you would like to change about your nutrition?

It’s hard coming back after an injury. Good luck taking it slow and easy and resisting the sign up sheet! There are way too many races that are appealing, but this year I am trying to be good and keep my race calendar manageable! Peanut M & M,s have been my downfall lately, oh and the nightly bowl of ice cream!
Deborah Brooks says
It is hard coming back after an injury but I am determined to do it smartly and not re-injure myself. Thanks for stopping by!
Megan (The Lyons' Share) says
This post makes me happy for so many reasons! Of course, I LOVE that you’re aware of some nutrition changes – you are ROCKING the Reset! I also love that you’re employing such discipline to make sure you come back safely, and love the fact that at yoga, it doesn’t really matter if you’re “good at it” or not. Keep it up!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks Megan! The reset has helped me to become more aware of a few things I can tweak
Mar @ Mar on the Run says
love this!! I’m with you on the coming back from injury thing. But definitely trying to be smart about I t. Thanks for linking up with us! I LOVE your blog header!!!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! My amazing friend designed it. If you ever need any graphic design let me know and I will hook you up.

Good luck on coming back from your stress fracture – I am glad you are easing your way into it. I have never done hot yoga before (although I do sweat plenty w/o 90-100 degree room hehe). Lately I have been overcome with the sweet tooth monster… I need to revert to my old self and eat my healthier sweet treats 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Hot yoga is really relaxing-you should try it. I do have a secret Hershey stash for those kind of days! WE all need to splurge sometimes.
Michelle @Baby Blues to Running Shoes says
Coming off an injury is hard work!!! I had a foot injury late last year and it drove me crazy! The hardest part was taking it slow when I got back to running!
Deborah Brooks says
Agreed that is the hardest part when you just want to go!
Meranda@fairytalesandfitness says
Hi! Glad to see you linked up with the friday 5! I am also (trying to) come back from an injury. It’s a slow process! So fun that you have a local MRTT! I hope your family opts to do more fitness activities with you to. That should be fun! -M
Deborah Brooks says
It is a slow process! And a frustrating one! MRTT is the best and I am so glad I started my chapter. I don’t know what I did before these great ladies came into my life. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read the blog. Hope to see you again soon!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I love your goals! I had a stress fracture last year that lasted for a very long time…congrats that you’re already back on your feet and running again! I’ve just developed an addiction to yoga…it’s difficult but it somehow doesn’t scare me off! And I love that you want to bond with your family over fitness. I’m doing the same with my sister, hopefully I’ve been encouraging!
Deborah Brooks says
Ah yes those stress fractures kind of sneak up on you and don’t want to go away! Yoga is great too! Good luck with your sister-find something you both love! Thanks for taking the time to read my posts. Hope to see you again soon.
Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC says

Amanda H says
Love the variety in your goal list and how you have everything covered! Good luck coming back from your injury! It’s so hard to take it slow and not overdo it, but you seem like you’re on track 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
You’re right it is hard to take it slow and be disciplined but I know that’s how I will keep healthy & running. Thanks for stopping by!
Cynthia @ You Signed Up For WHAT?! says
Love your goals! I recently did a sugar detox and it really helped me to be more wary of ingredients when I added things back in. Good luck with the goals!
Deborah Brooks says
It is surprising when you start to look at sugar. I thought my diet was pretty good before I started paying attention to this. Thanks for stopping by!
Michele @apaceofbalance says
I loved hot yoga, but after my Groupon expired I found it was just too expensive around here. I LOVE that you are doing a century ride! I would love to do one some day. Most I’ve ever done is 25 miles.
Deborah Brooks says
Don’t be afraid of the Century rides-most have options for 25 and 50 mile rides as well. They are untimed and you can stop and rest and stretch too.
Michelle says
I love this post! I too have been trying to step out of the box adding yoga to my workouts!
Deborah Brooks says
I have to say I’m loving my hot yoga sculpt class. It’s a great compliment to running. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read the blog.
Wendy@BlushandBarbells says
I definitely need to improve my eating habits. I eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg, but the rest isn’t great. I’ve definitely got a sugar problem that I need to work on
Deborah Brooks says
everything has sugar in it! I’m amazed! Things that I thought were so healthy have so much sugar. Once I started to really take a deeper look I realized there was lots I could improve on. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and read the blog!
Tina Muir says
Hi Deborah, just found your blog through Angela @ Happy Fit Mama! Nice to meet you 🙂 This is a great post, and I am excited to follow you in your journey to achieving these goals. I think you have made them realistic 🙂
My fitness goal is to run a 1:13 in my half marathon next month, and fine tune my nutrition these last few weeks to allow me the opportunity to reach it 🙂 Have a wonderful monday!
Deborah Brooks says
Tina Glad you found my blog too! I’m trying to keep things real for sure. Good luck next month with the half. Which one are you doing? I feel nutrition does play a big role in running performance. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for stopping by and reading the blog. Have a great day!
