I’m linking up again today for the “Friday Five” today’s topic 5 Fitness Truths
1. RUN YOUR OWN RACE- I can’t tell you how many times I’ve made this mistake. I have “race plan” figured out and then I cross that start line and poof I all of the sudden decide, “I feel good I think I will run 60 seconds faster per mile than I practiced”. Yep that usually lasts for a few miles and then I totally die and blow the race. Stick with the plan that you have for yourself and try not to get caught up or come up with any new ideas at the start line.
2. NUTRITION- is half if not more of the total picture. It’s easy to get caught up in believing that because you exercise you can eat what ever you want. That never worked for me. Dieting is so last decade! Fuel your body with healthy foods and your body will respond. You will have more energy. STRONG IS THE NEW SKINNY. Eat like an athlete not a swimsuit model.
3.STRETCHING-we all struggle to fit this in. We are all in hurry to shower and change and get somewhere. Don’t skimp on the stretching! Your body will definitely rebel eventually.
4. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BODY- (injuries suck!)- When something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Simple but true. I’ve certainly learned this the hard way. No one wants to skip a planned run or worse a race but it’s better to miss one run or one race than months of runs. When you’re in the moment, it can be hard to remember. I don’t only want to run/workout today, I want to run tomorrow and next year too.
5. EVERYTHING IN MODERATION!!

What are your “FITNESS TRUTHS”?
Coco says
Love these! OMG on #1 that was the story of several races I did last year.
Deborah Brooks says
Me too! It’s so easy to abandon your plan at the last minute. I think it is the adrenaline rush at the beginning. Thanks for stopping by!
Megan (The Lyons' Share) says
Great truths, Deborah! I agree completely – it can be so hard to run your own race, fit in stretching, and listen to your body, but they’re so worth it! And of course – I believe wholeheartedly that nutrition is (at least) half the battle!
Deborah Brooks says
definitely true! Thanks for stopping by!
M says
Agree! Happy to find you through the linkup.
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks me too! Have a great day & thanks for stopping by!
Stacy says
Great “truths”! I completely agree with you, but I particularly struggle with #3!
Deborah Brooks says
It is hard to remember to stretch but I’m always happy I did. Thanks for stopping by
Deborah Brooks says
yes but it pays off! Thanks for stopping by!
Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC says
yep. as you know, #3 is a STRUGGLE! thank goodness for barre classes 😉
Deborah Brooks says
stretching is hard to remember to do but my body always thanks me afterwards!
Chaitali says
Great truths! I quickly learned that just because I was being more active, I still couldn’t eat everything! And it’s definitely been easier to eat well once I started thinking of it as fueling 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
It does help to think of eating as fueling your activities. Thanks for stopping by!
Salt says
These are all fantastic and I especially agree with #4. I knew something was up with my ankle earlier this year which is why I stopped my run streak, but then I did end up going too hard on it a couple weeks later and sidelined myself for a month. Better to just play it smart and rest at the first sign of something going haywire!
Deborah Brooks says
For sure! I will not make that mistake again either. I was out for 9 weeks. Not good!
Diatta @ Femme Fitale Fit Club says
I must take it easy on the bad eating and drinking. I love food tremendously but end up breaking even once it is all said and done because I love to eat. I also have to keep the bad food out of the house so I won’t indulge.
Deborah Brooks says
Yep hard to do! I have to just keep it out of the house and make sure that I have healthy snacks here. I also need to snack often so I don’t get too hungry. Thanks for stopping by!
Mar @ Mar on the Run! says
yep all of these, and #2 is my main topic today!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes! I saw your post too. Nutrition is so much more important than people think. When you eat well you feel good. Thanks for linking up today #FridayFive
Jennifer says
These are some great truths! I have to remind myself that I can’t justify eating everything just because I worked out (especially when I have a low mileage week).
Deborah Brooks says
I try not to justify food at all anymore either way and I am so much happier! Thanks for stopping by!
Meranda@fairytalesandfitness says
I know #4 all to well! Hopeful i’ll be running soon!
Deborah Brooks says
So many of us are injured it seems. I’m just getting back myself. Hang in there-hope you have a speedy recovery. Thanks for stopping by.
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
Awesome list! I always try to stretch after a workout, but you’re right – sometimes I’m in a hurry and just skip it – but I always regret it later when I’m super tight and sore. Dealing with the injury thing now as you know – it’s taking all my willpower not to go out for a run! It’s been two weeks since my last run and I’m dying to lace up!
Deborah Brooks says
oh Nicole I feel you. I was out for 9 weeks. It’s so hard not to go out and run when you keep reading about other people running. Hang in there. You will make it back too.
Wendy@BlushandBarbells says
#2 is such a struggle for me! But I’m making progress.
Deborah Brooks says
Nutrition is hard sometimes but it makes such a difference! Baby steps!
Michele @ A Pace of Balance says
Yes, #2, yes! Diet is everything and unfortunately I have trouble with it. I will workout, you can count on that. But I just wish I didn’t love junk so much. I’m one of those people who CANNOT have junk in the house. If I know there are cookies in the cupboard, I will reach for them when it’s time to catch up on Nurse Jackie 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
yes #2 is challenging but I’ve found small changes make a big difference. Having said that sometimes we all need chocolate and that’s ok! Have a great day.
John @ run. geek. run(disney) says
I love #1. I tell myself that every race. I do Jeff Galloway’s run-walk and always remind myself to “just run MY race”.
Deborah Brooks says
It is so easy to get swept up at race time and forget to stick to your plan. I have never done Galloway’s program but I hear good things. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. Have a great day!!
Nicola says
Some really great tips here!! I’ve nominated you for a Liebster Award – you can find out all the details about it on my blog: http://runningonclean.com/2014/05/10/girls-gone-sporty-leibster-award/
Deborah Brooks says
Oh thanks so much Nicola! I just did two of them about 2 weeks. So kind of you to think of me though. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read some of my posts. I will check yours out as well. #GirlsGoneSporty
Cynthia @ You Signed Up For WHAT?! says
I have really been thinking about RUN YOUR OWN RACE a lot lately. I totally did that run faster than I practiced because I felt great thing at my Seashore Classic Half Marathon! Then I couldn’t keep it up. I was happy overall but it really made me think through the next race in a different way!
Deborah Brooks says
absolutely I make that mistake all the time and end up blowing all of my plans. It’s hard not to get swept up in the excitement.
