February 20224 Ultimate Coffee Date
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…
I had my annual visit with my Gyn this week and when the nurse asked me to hop on the scale, I said “no thanks”. She kind of looked at me funny. I had just eaten lunch and had a giant coffee. Why in the world would I want to get onto the scale? So I didn’t. And that was that. You don’t have to get on a scale if you don’t want to. I know this would not bother some people but I am not one of them.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…
Despite the weather challenges we had in January, I was surprised to see that I achieved my highest running mileage since last March. Most of last year brought many running struggles. I am happy to be very slowly and very quietly regaining my running mileage and confidence. For a long time, I never thought I would be able to get back here and I am truly grateful.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…
Being ready is a decision not a feeling.
Having said that, I am doing my first race on Sunday in over a year. It’s a Valentine’s Day 10K that I have done a number of time in yeas past. Am I ready? I don’t know but I have decided that I am. It will be slow and steady but I will finish. At the very least, I will have an opportunity for a holiday themed race. You all know how much I love to pull out holiday gear!
Your turn! If we were having coffee, what would you tell me?

I’ve shared with you my struggles about getting weighed. I didn’t appreciate the pushback I got at my last doctor’s appointment. As I’ve said before, very little in adult medicine requires an updated weight. I don’t want to know what I weigh!
So glad to hear that running is going so well for you. It’s going to be a good year!
Deborah Brooks says
I understand needing to check weight if you are pregnant or have an obvious weight issue on either spectrum. However, I did not feel like my weight was necessary and I am proud of me for standing up for myself
Michelle says
Good for you for pushing back on being weighed – if it makes you uncomfortable and needed for any health evaluation why do it.
Good luck with your race!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks, I just didn’t’ see the need for it at the time and I knew it would upset me.
Darlene S. Cardillo says
I never get on a scale. I don’t need a number.
How do we know we are ready? I feel the same.
Congrats on the miles. Mine was low for obvious reasons. It can only get better.
Good luck on the race!!
Deborah Brooks says
WE never know we are ready we just have to do it
Kimberly Hatting says
Interesting about the weight “requirement” at the appointment! I had no idea it was an optional thing or I would have boycotted as well. I’m so glad your running is going well! That 10K sounds fun!
Deborah Brooks says
I don’t think they advertise it as optional-lol. I just didn’t see a need for it so I said no. It was kind of empoweering
Marcia says
Good for you for taking charge at the drs. office! It’s your visit and your body after all. That’s so great you’ve been able to build back your miles so nicely. I’m in the zero miles club so I’ll have to follow your lead on that. Eventually. Have fun at your race!
Deborah Brooks says
It felt good to stand up for myself at the Dr, and I didn’t see a need for it. It has been a long, slow build back but I am happy to be doing it
Coco says
Good for you for pushing back! Sometimes the nurse will ask me if I know about how much I weigh, and go with that.
Have fun at the 10K. I’m sure just lacing up and lining up at the start will feel amazing!
Deborah Brooks says
I felt good for standing up for myself. Looking forward to this weekend
Jenny says
Wow. I never thought about saying “no” to being weighed. I think you may have started something here!
I was listening to a podcast the other day- The Ultra Running Guys- and their tagline is “When in doubt, just show up.” I’m so glad you’re feeling good and are doing this race! When we’re in the middle of setbacks or injuries it’s so hard to remember that it WILL end, but it always does. I can’t wait to hear all about it.
Deborah Brooks says
My motto has always been just show up so that’s my plan and I am sticking to it. I felt pretty good standing up for myself about the weighing. 🙂 I am not sure if my co moment went through on your site. Please let me know if it did not thanks
Melodie says
I don’t blame you for not getting on the scale, and this day and age I am surprised the nurse thought that was strange! That is great about your higher mileage in January! I am glad you are able to do more than you thought you would. I know injuries can feel defeating and I know you must be so grateful you are now where you are.
Good luck this weekend! I am sure you will do great and may even surprise yourself. It sounds like a really fun race!
Deborah Brooks says
I am so grateful that I can do more than I expected. Fingers crossed I can keep moving forward. And yes, had no interest in getting on the scale right after lunch!
Erica @ Erica Finds says
I normally just turn around and ask them not to say the number out loud. I try not to let my weight get to me, but it does sometimes – so why poke the bear?
Good luck in your race! Focus on a PR in smiles per mile!
Deborah Brooks says
I love that-PR in smiles! That is my plan
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I’m glad that your running is going well and I hope you have a great time at your race!
Deborah Brooks says
thanks so much slowly getting back the miles
Farrah says
Yay! I’m glad you’re reganing your running mileage/confidence! I’m hoping to do that sometime this year (but in regards to lifting weights). I hope you have fun on the 10k!
Deborah Brooks says
slowly getting my confidence back thanks
Zenaida Arroyo says
I didn’t know that it was an option to get weighed. I always get weighed and roll my eyes when I see the number. Now I will say “no” the next time I go to the doctor. Good to hear running is going well for you.
Deborah Brooks says
I am sure there are medical conditions that would require weight to be measured. But, there are also general visits that don’t necessitate it.
Nicole @ Foodie Loves Fitness says
How did the race go?! I’m sure you killed it!
I totally know what you mean about the scale – can definitely relate! My husband hops on the scale at the end of the day after he’s eaten a huge meal or right after we get home from a long vacation.. meanwhile I’m like no way! Ha.
Deborah Brooks says
Yeah, my husband does the same. To each his own! 🙂
