This month kind of flew by and this Runfessions and Confessions post snuck up on me! No worries though, there is always something to Runfess. Thanks to Marcia for hosting!

February 2024 Runfessions and Confessions

I Runfess and Confess…

I Runfess and confess that as I am building back my mileage, I am having to relearn all of my hydration and fueling techniques. Last year, I felt like I had my routine nailed down and I did at that time. I carry water with electrolytes all year round as I am a big sweater and I can easily get dehydrated. Now, I am relearning to fuel effectively again on longer runs.

I Runfess and Confess…

I’ve been training for a few spring races kind of under the radar. I wasn’t sure how I would feel or how it would go so I have not mentioned it here yet. I’m excited to be training for the Shamrock Shuffle 8K in Chicago (with Wendy) and to return to my favorite hometown race The Cherry Blossom 10 miler in April. More on both of those later!

I Runfess and confess…

I am also looking for some other hydration options that do not contain sugar. My go to SIS Hydration tablets are getting harder to find. If you have any suggestions for me, let me know.

That’s all I’ve got today! See you next week at the Ultimate Coffee Date linkup!

About Deborah Brooks

Hi I'm Deborah! I spend my days successfully raising a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. I am a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, I've always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, I started my own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 700 members. I've met so many amazing women who inspire me daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find me running with my crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked me into. I love to keep up to date on new running & fitness trends. I definitely choose my running gear based on color and love to express my fashion sense while exercising.

Oh, darn, I’ll be in Chicago the weekend BEFORE the Shamrock Shuffle!

All in all, I’d say these are good problems to have since they mean you are back!

I am slowly making my way back or to a new place we shall see

I seem to need electrolytes more now as well. I need to do better about bringing my running bottle with me, even on shorter runs! That is exciting about your upcoming spring races, those sound really fun. I like the LMNT electrolyte packs! I believe you can get a free sample pack on their website.

I tried those once and they seemed so salty! I will try again thanks

I have to add extra water! I probably do double the water that is suggested!

          interesting!

I’ll be interested to see what hydration options you come up with. I love Tailwind but it has a TON of sugar, so I would only use it for really long runs. I just read Melodie’s comment above- I do use LMNT and love it, and it has no sugar. That might be good for you.
That’s exciting you’re planning for some races! And a race with Wendy- how exciting. You’re in a good place, after all the trials and tribulations of the past year. Just goes to show- hang in there and have patience. Things will work out.

You do have to keep showing up! Tailwind yes has too much sugar and I don’t like taste at all. I will keep searching

Nice to have a few races to look forward to! I also like LMNT but find I only use it in the really hot summer months when I sweat a ton. I’m not a fan of anything with fizz which seems to eliminate a lot these days. Hope you find something that works for you.

I don’t like fizz in my hydration either. It’s not that easy to find what I am looking for!

I haven’t used SIS in awhile ( I loved their gels), so this has me curious if that’s still available (?). I’ve been using Honey Stinger chews (more so because they’re readily available locally & don’t destroy my tummy), but it’s been several months since I’ve “needed” them since I haven’t done any long training runs. I’ll be curious how your search goes!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/23/2024 at 3:51 pm

I do use the chews but I also like some hydration in my water bottle. I am on the hunt

  6. Jenn says

    02/23/2024 at 10:24 am

    So exciting on races!

I am the worst person to ask for hydration advice. Nuun is always my preferred, when I think of it, but I can manage gatorade or powerade with sugar just fine if need be. Since I hate carrying things when I run, I mostly rely on what’s at home or what the races have available.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/23/2024 at 3:53 pm

Ha I am way too picky I am on the hunt!

  7. Darlene S Cardillo says

    02/23/2024 at 11:05 am

Both races sound like fun. I do need to run the Cherry Blossom 10m at some point.

I only fuel with water and GU – creature of habit.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/23/2024 at 3:54 pm

I cannot stand the GU! I do like something in my water with hydration so I am on the hunt

  8. Cari says

    02/23/2024 at 12:26 pm

It’s messy, but the SIS powder is my usual DIY since I can’t find the one Nuun I like often enough.
Are you trying to avoid the sugar subs too? Gatorade Zero is my other option if it’s short enough to stay cold. I can’t do warm flavors. I do it with the packets as regular is too fake sweet for me.
    YOu’ve got these!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/23/2024 at 3:55 pm

I don’t really like stevia either. I am very picky I guess

  9. Marcia says

    02/24/2024 at 9:14 am

Those are some fun races you’ve got coming up! Hopefully our mild weather will continue here for you. Sorry I have no recommendations on a sugar/artificial sweetener-free electrolyte drink for you.

yes I am excited about getting back out there
