Eat, Play, Run Southern Style

I realized that I will be in eating, playing and running in 3 different cities over a 3 week period, so I thought it would be fun to do a 3 part series of my adventures. This past weekend I tagged along with the hubs for a work event in Greensboro, Georgia (outside of Atlanta). I had never been to that area and was excited to Eat, Play, Run Southern Style. Also, I would never pass up a chance to spend the weekend at a Ritz Carlton  alone with my husband.

Eat, Play, Run Southern Style

We flew down to Atlanta on Friday (short flight from the DC area) and had a 1.5 hour drive to the Ritz-Carlton at Lake Oconee.

Eat

As soon as I get into vacation mode, I start treating myself to all sorts of good eats. That’s what vacations are for right? I did not wait too long as I splurged on this pizza right in the airport. Oh and I ate the whole things myself-oops!

Eat, Play, Run Southern Style

I guess I had not thought about how Southern all the food would be! The first night we attended a “Denim and Diamonds” dinner with BBQ type foods. I could not find that much to eat that was healthy and vegetarian so I decided to give into the S’mores Pie for dessert. When in The South…

The next day for lunch there was a great Taco Bar then that evening at the more formal dinner I was expecting lighter food but no such luck. I’ve never seen a Mac n’ Cheese bar before but it was pretty yummy. All of that food need to be worked off so I took advantage of the resort’s activities.

Play

These unique Water Bikes were new to me and they were an absolute blast. The double hulled boat gave me confidence that I would not flip over. Unlike a paddle boat, you are actually up on a real bike seat peddling. I was surprised by how easy it was to maneuver around the lake.

Finished off the night with lots of dancing which I had not done in a long time!

Run

Vacation running is the best isn’t it? There was a 7 mile out and back path within the resort. This unexpectedly hilly route took me through beautiful wooded paths, serene lakes and along the well manicured Golf Course. It was a beautiful morning and I loved seeing the resort on foot.

A lovely, relaxing weekend away with the hubs at a beautiful resort. I am not the biggest fan of the heavy Southern food though! This weekend, we are off to Philadelphia for another weekend of Eat, Play, Run. Look forward to sharing those exploits with you next week.

Looks like a great trip! I love running on vacation. I was in Charleston this summer and not a huge fan of the southern food. They did have alot of good food, but anything too heavy or spicy was not for me.

I have never seen those water bikes either, but they look like a lot of fun. I always feel like I gotta incorporate some time of activity while on vacation because I eat so much good food.

I remember when they built that Ritz! It was a huge development project for the lake. My parents have had a house on the lake since I was two–they were the 3rd house in the cove! It is a great area, and I’m so glad that you had fun!

I love vacation running! Such a great way to explore new cities. I have no clue about Southern Food (especially the vegan version). I’d probably have to eat grits the whole time. That pizza looks good though. I love arugula on most everything.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      10/25/2017 at 7:41 pm

It was not too vegetarian friendly!

I totally get you about going to the south and not finding healthy, vegetarian foods!! I’m going to New Orleans in January and will just have to come prepared to eat very little while out and about, and just stock up from the grocery store so I can have breakfast and snacks in my Airbnb. AND I love vacation running 🙂 All the new sites are fun to take in on a run!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      10/26/2017 at 4:46 pm

Yes I can imagine it might be hard to find the foods you are used to there as well.

What fun! We used to do that sort of thing, but sadly the hubs no longer travels for work. Which can be a good thing, too. That pizza looks delish and s’mores pie? Who could resist that?

Never even heard of a water bike, but I would definitely try it! Since we lived in TX, it was much more BBQ & Tex-Mex than true southern food.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      10/26/2017 at 4:48 pm

Yes sometimes work travel is good sometimes not. I am going to try to recreate the s’mores pie for Thanksgiving

That looks like a fun little weekend! I’m not a big fan of Southern cooking either. Although there was a restaurant in Atlanta I love called Pitty-Pat’s Porch that was fantastic. Not sure it still exists!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      10/26/2017 at 7:08 pm

Ha I have no idea! The food is for sure very different than what I was used to
