Wondering what all the buzz is about Peloton Hiking classes? Perhaps you have been intimidated about trying a hiking class? Peloton instructor Emma Lowell hosted a 4 class series (“residency”) of classes to get members excited about these class modalities. Here’s what you need to know.
Crush Your Climb with Emma
This 4 week, 4 class collection of hiking classes can be found under the “collections” tab on the Peloton app. These classes originally aired in June of 2024 and can now be found on demand anytime. All classes are 30 minutes long. You can take them in any order you wish however, they were designed as a set that gets increasingly morechallenging each week.
What is the structure of the crush your climb classes?
This set of 4 classes gets progressively more challenging each week. The percent of time spent at the higher inclines increases each week as do the suggested speeds. Classes are a pyramid style simulating hiking up a mountain and back down, repeating this sequence. This style of programming offers lots of variety to switch up the intensity, play with speed and incline and prevent boredom.
Who are these classes for?
Anyone who enjoys doing cardio can do these hikes. As you may notice, Emma is in her 3rd trimester of pregnancy when she filmed these classes. Treadmill based incline walks are an excellent way to get in a high intensity cardio workout without the impact of running.
Are they difficult?
Like most workouts, you decide how easy or hard to work. You can adjust the incline and speed to fit your needs. Emma offers a range for the speed for each incline.
How to incorporate into your training schedule
Hiking classes can be incorporated into your workout schedule in a number of ways:
-As a warm up before a strength class
-In place of a run day
-On a non run day as low impact cardio
What are the benefits of incline walking?
-cardio benefits without the impact of running.
-Muscle activation, sculpting and strengthening of the glutes, quads and calves.
-Calorie burn: Walking at 3 mph on a super-incline trainer races between 16 and 18 percent burns 70 percent more fat than running with no incline.
-Injury reduction: incline walking can lower some injury risks (over use injuries, impact injuries)

These do sound challenging! Although I’m currently without a friendly treadmill, I’m hoping to acquire one before winter hits. The varied inclines would keep the workout interesting!

It looks like a great way to change things up. Perfect for moving indoors when the weather is so hot and humid. Though I’m not a fan of running on the treadmill these classes look like a great alternative.

That’s cool. I don’t use Peloton, but I like the hiking programs on the elliptical and the stairmaster. I imagine this would be similar.
