Thanks for joining me and Kim for the weekly run down today. After another busy week of travel, it is nice to be back on Eastern Standard Time again. (at least for a few weeks!). Here is a peek into my week of fitness and running.
Back on Eastern Standard Time
Sunday I was wide awake at 4:45 am and then could not keep my eyes open all afternoon. It took a few days but I am back on eastern standard time.
Monday- Peloton barre, core, upper body & cycle class
So glad to be back on eastern standard time and back on schedule. I started Robin’s (Peloton) advanced 3 day strength program this week just to mix things up a bit. Might not be able to move my triceps tomorrow.
Tuesday- Progression run 5.5 miles + barre + stretch + core
Today’s run was brutal. My plan called for a progression run which I usually find challenging but in this heat, it was not pretty. I did my best out there and got the miles in but my paces were way off. I was toast by the last interval. Fall can’t come soon enough!
Wednesday- Upper body + core + barre + stretch
I switched up the scheduled workouts today to back/Bi instead of legs. These summer runs are hard enough without sore legs! I will do the glutes and legs on Friday instead.
Thursday-4.5 mile run + barre + core + stretch
I got my butt up and out a lot earlier than usual in an attempt to beat the oppressive heat. It was a little bit better but I am way off of my paces and distances. This heat really gets me! I am just going to keep moving forward.
Friday- lower body + core + barre + Peloton cycle
I hit it hard today with the strength training as I knew I would have a day to recover tomorrow. My butt was on fire after this lower body class!
Saturday- rest day with barre and stretch
I keep up my Peloton streak on rest days with a short barre class and stretch. I shopped around the farmer’s market and got some great tomatoes and canteloupes.
Sunday- on the plan 7 mile run
I am planning to get out earlier (for me) and get my miles in before the extreme heat comes roaring in.
It has been a really tough for running around here! I am getting a tad nervous about my half marathon in 8 weeks. The week ahead does not look much better but we will power through!

Our heat was pretty intense this week, especially yesterday. I think we reached 106F for the heat index! It gets hot & steamy here, but that was extreme for Iowa. I hope you get some relief & a break in the weather soon.
Deborah Brooks says
yes, we have had that for the past week. Looks like things should start to get better end of the week
Wendy says
I too have a half in 8 weeks and I haven’t run anything farther than 6 miles in a month. The heat is a challenge! I’m heading out soon and hoping to get some decent miles.
Deborah Brooks says
I always forget how hard it is to train this time of the year!
Melissa says
Welcome back!! Good luck with the 7 miler. I’m sure you will be fine for your upcoming half – you are doing such a great job with crosstraining and running, even with all your travel and the heat.
Deborah Brooks says
I am not in the shape I was in the spring but the summer just does that to me!
Marcia says
I think you’ll be fine for your half. Paces in heat just don’t matter. Once it cools down you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Focus on time on your feet.
Deborah Brooks says
thanks that is what I am trying to do but wow it can be discouraging huh?
Darlene says
You’ll be fine. 8 weeks is plenty of time. You’re in great shape. Just get that 10 miler in.
I have a half in less than a month. Yikes.
Training in the summer is a challenge. Especially this summer.
Deborah Brooks says
It really is a challenge! I know I will get there but it just might not be so pretty 🙂
Chocolaterunsjudy says
You know that Summer running is by effort, not pace! Just getting out there is winning. Definitely not an easy week weather wise & the heat is lingering too. 8 weeks is a long time, and by then you’ll be reaping the benefits of that Summer running!
Deborah Brooks says
I sure hope so!
Jessie says
Welcome back! Jet leg is worse after a vacation 🙂
You are doing great in that heat- it’s tough! Paces must be compromised to stay safe!
I need to check out this strength training program you’re all talking about! Somehow I often miss the programs until I hear about them from you 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
The heat is really so defeating. I am just trying to power through. I do like to try the new programs
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
You’re doing your training in the heat and then fall will hit and you’ll be amazed at how much easier running will seem in the cooler temps. You’ve got this!
Deborah Brooks says
I sure hope so as it is quite defeating at the moment!
Coco says
It has been hot and humid, but you know sucking it up now will pay off big time with fall races!
Deborah Brooks says
I sure hope so!
Jenny says
You will be fine for your half!!! All this training in the heat will make fall running seem easy. You’re still getting in the workouts even if your pace is slower.
So you did an advanced strength training program? I’m always afraid to try the advanced classes- intermediate are hard enough! I believe you when you say you were sore.
Deborah Brooks says
yes, I did Robin’s advanced 3 day split this week and enjoyed it. It was challenging but doable
Michelle says
The time on your feet will certainly pay off later. I hope your 7 miler went well – this weather has been tough to take!
Deborah Brooks says
I am still standing! Well sorta 🙂
Kim G says
I love your bag that you used at the Farmer’s Market – so cute!
I hope that your run today went well. Will we ever get a break from the heat and humidity?!
Deborah Brooks says
It may have been a little less sucky today! 🙂
Liz Dexter says
We’ve got another hot week coming up, I’m fortunate I’m not training for anything so can just take it reasonably easy but it’s annoying as I’d just got back up to 20 mile weeks again!
Deborah Brooks says
I know it really is annoying and I also like to be at 20 miles per week
Jenn says
Not going to lie: we have given up on our runs more than once in the last few weeks. It’s dangerous out there.
glad you’re back on the East coast. All that traveling can really mess with you!
Deborah Brooks says
It is rough out there for sure. I love to travel but it is always nice to be back in my own bed
