Thanks for joining Kim and me for our Weekly Run Down today. This week was a week of April showers almost every day. That is pretty typical of our spring around here. What’s a runner to do? Run through the puddles of course!
April Showers Weekly Run Down
Monday- Recovery Day + Peloton stretches
A recovery day for me after yesterday’s Cherry Blossom 10 Miler. (race recap here). Of course, I did a few Peloton stretch classes to keep up my “blue dot” streak.
I also finally visited a Podiatrist to chat about my growing bunion. Ugh. I also got another nice blister at the race yesterday. Good news: I have no joint or nerve damage and it is considered mild. She also thought many of my symptoms can be helped by switching to a running shoe with a bigger toe box. I did some research and ordered a pair of Brooks Ghosts. They should have more space in the toe box area. I will report back on how that goes! Bad news: there is really nothing to do to stop a bunion from “progressing”. Alas, just when you think you have this whole running thing all figured out!
Tuesday- 5 mile recovery run + core + stretch
I almost rolled over and bailed on this rainy April showers run. It always feels better once you are out there. With temps around 50 degrees, it was not too bad with the raindrops. If you wait for perfect conditions…
I got my 4th Covid shot this afternoon. No symptoms at all so far.
Wednesday- heavy full body strength + core
Oh look it’s raining again! I was in the mood to kick my own ass today so I stacked up some serious strength classes and got it done. Yep, I am going to feel that tomorrow!
Thursday- 6 miler run + stretch + short arms class
When I named this week, April Showers, I was not kidding. It was another rainy morning but I decided to make the most of it. I still would rather be outside and there are so many reasons to opt outside.
Something I also reminded myself of today on my solo run was that every run is not a race. My legs were tired today after a heavy strength day yesterday and running slower is okay.
My top reasons to run in the rain…

Friday-Peloton cycle + upper & lower body strength + core + yoga
A little bit of everything today. I had one of those days waiting on 2 different service calls so stacking a bunch of shorter classes worked to my benefit. Finishing off with a nice hip opening yoga class was the best. Oh yes, it did rain again today in case you were keeping track.
Saturday- rest day /neighborhood walk + stretch
We woke up to a mostly sunny morning and I had to take advantage of an easy neighborhood walk and Peloton stretch. And yes, it is supposed to rain again this afternoon.
Sunday- On the plan 8 miles
Looking forward to a longer run today with pretty mild temps. I have one more sprig race coming up in 2 weeks, The GW Parkway Classic 10 miler.
It was indeed a week of April Showers around here! Looks like we are in for a taste of summer in the week ahead. I am just going to roll with whatever mother nature throws at me!
April showers, indeed! We also had a hefty serving of April wind in Iowa (#eyeroll). Another 10-miler coming up! That’s exciting… you’re knocking out some great races this Spring 🙂
Pretty much all of our good races are March and April then it is too hot. I am taking full advantage this spring
Another race!! How exciting. It’s great to be back out there. Good job getting it in even with the spring showers. We had some wet days too this week, and smow!
I guess I cannot complain the rain when some of you are still having snow!
We’ve certainly had our share of rain this week as well! Guess who’s running on pavement today? I just need a break from the mud. Have a great week!
Sounds like a smart idea!
The rain is something else lately. I’m over it! I like the sound of a taste of summer! It’s supposed to get in the 60’s here tomorrow I think, but then more rain! Ugh!
Spring is always so iffy! Have a great week
I’m impressed by your cow face pose! My hips don’t do that.
It was a wet week this week.
I’m bummed I won’t be able to do GWPC with you. 🙁
cow face is hard but feels good when I get there. One of these years we will run a race together!
okay, maybe my issue is a bunion too? DM me a picture of yours, ha! I do have an appointment with a podiatrist that specializes in athletes/runners, but I couldn’t get in until after Boston. Switching to men’s shoes has helped me. Mine is on the pinkie toe- is yours the big toe?
Ugh, the things we deal with to keep running 🙂
It could be a bunion too. My Doc said people can get them on both sides mine is on the big toe side. It is causing all kinds of blisters too and it’s not pretty.I just did a second run in the Ghost and I think I have less rubbing. What a pain in the ass. Looking forward to hearing what you find out and we can compare
Glad you didn’t seem to feel any effects from the booster! Nice job running in the rain. Here’s it’s still quite cold, so the rain hasn’t felt too pleasant — luckily I’ve managed to avoid it. 🙂
Service calls are the worst. Glad you had Peloton to keep you company. 🙂
yes I’ve had a few days of just waiting for hours for service people it is frustrating for sure.
Okay, if you don’t like the Brooks, I have a couple other suggestions for you. There are some New Balance models with very wide toe boxes, and also Hoka. I don’t have bunions, but I still need a really wide toe box. Hopefully this will solve the problem for you.
You really did have a lot of rain! My husband hates running in the rain, which I don’t really get. I agree with all your reasons, and especially the last one. I mean, you’re going to shower anyway, what’s the big deal?
I have just embraced the rain and I just make the most of it when it comes. Since I am a Brooks ambassador, I am trying to stick with them 🙂
Good job on getting outside for your runs despite all of the rain. And yep, I had enough rain last week to do me for weeks! I’m looking forward to this coming week’s warmer weather – I just hope we have a decent spring and don’t jump right into summer.
Have a great week!
it does seem to happen that summer heat rolls in quickly
Wonderful re: booster and no symptoms.
Yay no joint or nerve damage and double yay on Ghost twinning. As soon as I saw those I had to own them. The larger toe box might explain why I could switch from NB 1080 Wide to standard in the Ghosts.
I was mostly able to avoid the rain too, but also don’t mind a rain run if it’s mild. I noped out on the sleet, but I was also exhausted so weather was a good reason to punt on the run
I am always more tired after traveling and getting back into my routine.I really hope the Ghosts will do the trick for me too
We’ve had a bit of rain, but I do see the forecast for the upcoming week includes some on my outdoor workout days. Interesting about the bunion. I was talking to someone just yesterday at our group run who needed to change shoes for the same reason. I hope the new pair work out for you!
I think it must be a common thing but nothing I am excited about learning more about lol 🙂
Wow you really did have your share of April showers!
Sorry about the bunion – hopefully the Ghosts will do the trick for you. I really appreciate the wider toe box!
How fun that you have another race coming up! I envy the local 10 milers – it’s my favorite race distance, but hard to find around here.
the 10 milers are so hard to find so I felt like I had to jump on them both while I am feeling good. Ugh with the foot issues. I really hope the Ghosts will do the trick too!
It was such a rainy week here too, although the sun did play peek-a-boo a few times, lol.
Another solid week for you. and I’m glad that your booster shot went well.
thanks me too-I figured why not?
This rain is just too much! Our yard is a swamp and some neighbors are facing erosion issues. It’s no bueno.
Congrats again on Cherry Blossom! That’s so fun!
You did a great job this week, in spite of the uncooperative weather. Nice!
thanks Jen
