Thanks for joining Coco and me for the April 2022 Ultimate Coffee Date. These are always some of my most favorite posts to write and read. So, let’s get right to it. If we were having a coffee date today, I would have lots to tell you. Grab your mug and join me.
April 2022 Ultimate Coffee Date
If we were having coffee, I would tell you...
I wanted to follow up on my distressing “surprise medical bill” of $2500 that I mentioned last month, After a number of emails, messages, and annoyances, I finally got the right person on the phone. He acknowledged their “mistake” in billing me and removed the charges from my account. I was pretty proud of myself for getting this taken care of. New Federal Laws just went into effect addressing just this issue. It makes me so angry that many people are most likely in the same situation and may not know what to do.
If we were having coffee, I would ask you…
Do you still subscribe or receive any magazines in the mail anymore? Just as I prefer to read an actual book instead of an e-reader, I also like a magazine sometimes. I was a subscriber to Shape magazine for decades and that was discontinued this past fall. Also, I just got a postcard telling me that Health magazine was now discontinued as well. Oh well! I will have to be content with our Bon Appetit and Food & Wine issues from now on. I love to rip out and save recipes and food styling ideas. How about you? Do you like to hold a real magazine?
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…
I am excited to meet up with Coco and Cari tomorrow for brunch. Cari is in DC for the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler that we are both running this weekend. It is so much fun when we get to hang out with blogger/IG friends in person. Stay tuned for photos in Sunday’s Weekly Run Down and on IG stories tomorrow.
Your turn! If we were having coffee, what would you tell me?
Kimberly Hatting says
Glad to hear your medical bill was resolved. I’m sure that was a huge relief! I used to love reading magazines, too. I did have several annoyances finally getting my Runners World subscription to end (it kept auto-renewing long after I tried to stop receiving it).
Deborah Brooks says
Runners world has changed a lot the past few years. I used to anxiously await it’s arrival but not so much anymore
Marcia says
I have binders filled with torn out recipes. I subscribed to Bon Appetite for years and years. Now only Runners World keeps showing up and I don’t pay for it so I’m not sure what that’s about. It’s kind of sad to see magazines fade away. Glad you got the medical bill sorted. That’s so frustrating. Have so much fun this weekend!
Deborah Brooks says
It is kind of sad to see them fading away. Everyone does want to charge you for reading them online too!
Wendy says
Glad to hear you got that medical bill fixed. I had some other issues with our insurance which was frustrating but ultimately, I was able to work it out.
Like Marcia, I still get Runner’s World but I don’t even read it. Have you noticed catalogs are making a reappearance in the mailbox too?
Have fun this weekend!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes, I was really glad to get the bill resolved. I don’t think people know how to advocate for themselves about it. Yes, catalogs do seem ot be on the rise again perhaps they bought all of the magazine mailing lists
Michelle says
Glad you were able to get to the bottom of the billing issues – it’s such a maze isn’t it?!
I used to be a big magazine reader/subscriber, but now it’s dwindled down to just Women’s Running. The ironic thing is that the subscription was supposed to be just for a year as part of a promo I did with them and many years later it’s still showing up at my door.
Have fun this weekend!
Deborah Brooks says
I am so glad that I got it resolved too! I just knew it was wrong and it really bothered me to feel taken advantage of
Darlene says
I’m a real book person. I go to the library weekly. Yes I subscribe to magazines too. People runners world and womens running. I work in the computer all day. It’s a relief not to see a screen.
Enjoy this weekend. Hope yo join you one year.
Deborah Brooks says
It is a relief not to look at the screen all the time!

Ooh! That sounds like a super fun blogger meetup! I can’t wait to hear all about it, and the race.
We got Runner’s World magazine for years, but recently stopped. Sometimes when I’m in the store I’ll buy a home decorating or food magazine- I do like flipping through an actual magazine although I don’t subscribe to them anymore. When I was younger I used to love Glamor (which is funny in retrospect- it definitely didn’t make me glamorous!)
Glad you got the medical bill taken care of- that is outrageous.
Deborah Brooks says
OH yes I got Glamour for years too! So glad that I got the med bill taken care of. I was feeling very proud of myself!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
For years I subscribed to a variety of magazines. No longer. Some of the ones you just mentioned that are discontinued . . . I’m always busy reading something (but I love the Kindle app on my Ipad.
Glad you got the medical stuff straightened out. I swear it feels like we’re always calling about something for my mom.
Enjoy the meetup & the race!
Deborah Brooks says
somehow it doesn’t feel the same when I read on an iPad. Yes, it does seem like it can be very taxing to deal with medical issue and billing
Zenaida Arroyo says
That is great news about the medical bill. A mistake huh? I wonder if it really was and thought no one would look into it. I do get a couple of magazines because I used some points/miles from AA. I don’t read them but have used them for various projects at school with my students. Have a great race!
Deborah Brooks says
no I don’t think it really was a mistake!
Denise says
Sounds like a beautiful race. I wish there were more 10 milers. I still get Runner’s World. I like magazines but I have a Kindle for books.
Deborah Brooks says
I like 10 mile races too!
Coco says
I haven’t gotten magazines in ages, but I do miss flipping through them. I still get the newspaper — that’s about it. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!
Deborah Brooks says
Great to see you!
Erica @ Erica Finds says
Have fun with Cari and Coco and enjoy the run! I hope the weather is nice. It’s still pretty cold and gloomy here!
I still get magazines but have gotten a lot of cancellations lately, too! I got the one from Health – which I think was a substitute magazine I got when something else was discontinued b/c I never ordered or received it. I don’t mind e-reading books but I like real magazines.
Deborah Brooks says
I like magazines too sorry to see them all start to go!
Jessie says
Agree with earlier comments that I used to LOVE Runner’s World, but it’s changed so much. We still get it, but I don’t always read it. I think I pay for the online access as occasionally there will be an article I want to read. My husband still gets a ton of magazines- Esquire, GQ, Handyman magazine (ha!), Trail Runner mag, and probably others. Are men still more into magazines than women? Sad that Shape and Health are both ending…end of an era!
Deborah Brooks says
an end of an era for sure. I do agree that RW has changed and I also like to read the online articles sometimes although it annoys me that I have to pay more for them
Farrah says
I’m so glad you managed to get that taken care of! There are definitely so many people who wouldn’t have been able to get that addressed/gotten their money back. :[
I kinda like magazines too but don’t have any subscriptions anymore (was taking up too much space, but I’m with you on saving recipes and ideas!).
I hope you all had fun at brunch!
Deborah Brooks says
I was very proud of myself for getting the medical bill taken care of. I wish more people had the know how to advocate for themselves
