Benefits of a Post Meal Walk

Digestion

Walking “Post Prandial” aka following a meal aids in digestion helping foods move smoothly through your system. This may reduce feelings of bloating and fullness.

Blood Sugar Regulation

Walking after eating helps to regulate your blood sugar. After consuming food, your body works to process glucose. A short 10-15 minute walk can help lower blood sugar levels thus reducing spikes and crashes. While beneficial for all bodies, it is especially beneficial for those with diabetes or insulin resistance.

Heart health

A short walk post meal also benefits heart health by improving circulation and lowering blood pressure.

Mental Boost

Getting moving post meal gets those endorphins flowing and improves mood. You may even find your stress levels decreasing and your creativity increasing.

Extra Steps

Adding in a short post meal walk may just help you get that extra leg up on burning just a few more calories thus reaching your step or weight goals. Sometimes that little bit extra goes a long way!

Walking post meal might give you the time you need to catch up on a podcast, call a friend to chat, or just enjoy the quiet. If you are a Peloton user, new “post meal walks” and “extra step” walks are available to motivate and entertain you.

Bonus points? Add a weighted vest to your walks. This one is my favorite.

Who is ready to join me in reaping the many benefits of post meal walks?

About Deborah Brooks

Hi I'm Deborah! I spend my days successfully raising a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. I am a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, I've always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, I started my own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 700 members. I've met so many amazing women who inspire me daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find me running with my crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked me into. I love to keep up to date on new running & fitness trends. I definitely choose my running gear based on color and love to express my fashion sense while exercising.

Sometimes I try to get out for a quick walk after lunch if my schedule allows. Now that the weather is warming up its nice to get outside a little more!

I think walking after a meal is a great idea. My husband and I always say we’re going to do that (maybe even walk the dogs), but then we get lazy and it doesn’t happen. 🤷‍♀️

Yes that happens to all of us!

I love walking, especially in pleasant weather (thankfully, there’s more of that happening in the days/weeks/months ahead!). I usually get out for a post-lunch walk at work, but I also try to keep that ritual in the evenings when the weather allows. I’m using my vest for most of my “at-home” walks, so I’m eager to see how that plays into my increased fitness and stamina 😉

I know you also love to walk! Hope you are enjoying the vest

I love walking. The only problem is that here it gets so humid and gross through most of the year that post meal walks come with shower and a change of clothes.
