      • It might not feel quite like Holiday Season with these crazy warm temps everywhere however Thanksgiving is right around the corner. I don’t know about you but I tend to get a little stressed and overwhelmed right about now. I’ve come up with a few tips to help keep Healthy & Sane During The Holidays.
      • Plan your meals ahead of time. I find I am more stressed and time crunched around this time so I try to plan out my meals for the next few days. If I know that I am going to be having a big family dinner or party to attend, I try to plan lighter meals for the few days beforehand. That way, I can enjoy a small splurge.
      • Preregister for a Thanksgiving or Holiday themed race. This is a two fer as I know I am going to get my workout in and it’s also a stress reliever (escape) from your family for a few hours. Just saying :) Holiday races are low key and fun so why not?!
      • Just Say No! This time of year, it can feel like you are pulled in every direction with requests from family, friends, co workers, school to attend events and donate items etc. The pressure to do everything is stressful to say the least! It’s ok to just say no. You can’t do everything-at least not all at the same time.
      • Schedule some me time. Carve out a few hours for yourself to go to a movie, have coffee with friends or a date night with your significant other.
      • Powershop! Seriously all the stamina you’ve built up running, cycling & sweating it out has to be good for something! Check that fitness tracker because you can log in a lot of steps power walking through the mall.
  • Just a few of my tips to stay healthy & sane over the next month or so. What are your tips?
      • Reminder that The Ultimate Coffee Date Linkup is tomorrow! Grab a mug and join us!

About Deborah Brooks

Hi I'm Deborah! I spend my days successfully raising a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. I am a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, I've always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, I started my own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 700 members. I've met so many amazing women who inspire me daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find me running with my crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked me into. I love to keep up to date on new running & fitness trends. I definitely choose my running gear based on color and love to express my fashion sense while exercising.

I think that you have to also forgive yourself for your transgressions. We are all going to mess up!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 8:37 am

absolutely true and sometimes hard to to for me.

    11/06/2015 at 8:41 am

Just say NO is so important, yet something I really struggle with! Great reminders.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 1:47 pm

I do too! Let’s both say NO 🙂

  3. Jen says

    11/06/2015 at 9:11 am

I am with you on the meal planning and just saying no. The holiday treats and food make it so tough sometimes, but if you go in prepared, you’ll be much more likely to be successful!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 1:48 pm

I agree saying no is really hard sometimes but committing to too many things gets very stressful very quickly!

  4. Marcia says

    11/06/2015 at 9:42 am

I need to do ALL of this right now as it’s my year to host Thanksgiving. The stress is mounting already!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 1:53 pm

LOL we are hosting too! Just go with the just say no to some things it really helps

  5. Jess @hellotofit says

    11/06/2015 at 9:47 am

I did the turkey trot in Alexandria last year and it made me feel so much better, since I knew I’d be eating lots of Thanksgiving food 🙂 great post!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 1:53 pm

It does help start the day off! We are doing the 10k in Bethesda if you are up this way let me know

  6. [email protected] says

    11/06/2015 at 9:51 am

I really want to do a turkey trot, but then I feel like it is easier / less time consuming for me to just get an early am quick thanksgiving run in out my front door on my own…. I’d like a turkey trot the day after thanksgiving rather than on the day I have to make the turkey… a “post-turkey trot”

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 1:54 pm

that’s a good point too! I’ve done them the weekend before as well. I like the idea of getting up on T day and getting in a fun workout.

  7. Rachel @ RachelMcMichael.com says

    11/06/2015 at 9:58 am

These are fantastic tips!! And I’m totally sending this to my husband to remind him of the importance of shopping 😉

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 1:58 pm

Yes shopping and training for shopping are very important 🙂

  8. Nicole @ Fitful Focus says

    11/06/2015 at 10:23 am

Me time is so important! Like you said, this time of year can get so crazy and busy with plans, so it’s good to relax and recharge by your lonesome from time to time. I love the power shopping idea, too!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 2:00 pm

Power shopping is a win win 🙂

  9. Michelle @ Running with Attitude says

    11/06/2015 at 10:36 am

Love all of these – especially #3 and 4 – it is so easy to get pulled in too many directions this time of year, and carving out some quiet time for yourself helps to keep it all in check.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 2:01 pm

Thanks it does help doesn’t it!

  10. Mary Long says

    11/06/2015 at 10:47 am

Powershopping is a tradition of ours. Who wants to keep going back to the mall for more stuff. We make a whole day of it. Last year Macy’s started their black Friday prices the day before Thanksgiving. We stumbled upon that little gem by accident and CLEANED UP in there!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 2:03 pm

That sounds fun! Yes power shopping is a win win

  11. Debbie @ Coach Debbie Runs says

    11/06/2015 at 11:24 am

Great tips! I love #5 and I think #4 means I should schedule a massage :-). Can’t get any more “me time” than that!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 2:03 pm

I am with you! Schedule that massage for Thanksgiving week

  12. lindsey says

    11/06/2015 at 11:29 am

“Me Time” is so hard to come by…unless running solo counts!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 2:04 pm

Running solo counts if that’s your escape. It’s hard when you have little ones to find the time for yourself.

  13. Akaleistar says

    11/06/2015 at 11:32 am

I did a race on Thanksgiving last year and had so much fun! Sadly, no one in my family wants to do one this year…

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 3:18 pm

They are fun to do on T day. Maybe you can convince them!

  14. Cayanne Marcus says

    11/06/2015 at 12:17 pm

Love tips 3 & 4! It’s so important to practice self-care, especially when life gets hectic like during the holidays. I used to be the ultimate people pleaser, and learning that it’s ok to say “no” (healthy even!) to thing that don’t suit me was a game-changer.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 3:29 pm

It is hard to do! I am trying to do it myself and yes I am a lot happier too

  15. Mary Beth Jackson says

    11/06/2015 at 12:23 pm

great tips! I am a planner so I will have the shopping list all worked out ahead of time but #4 is important too! I think I will plan a little something nice for that weekend for the hubby and I 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 3:31 pm

It’s definitely important to plan some me time!

  16. Amanda says

    11/06/2015 at 1:30 pm

Great tips! I love the title– healthy AND sane haha we SO need that! It’s tough to do for sure.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 3:32 pm

It can be tough to do can’t it?!

  17. Kerry says

    11/06/2015 at 1:51 pm

Love the tips! I always try to run a Thanksgiving day race so I don’t feel so bad about stuffing my face! 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 6:29 pm

  18. Wendy @ Wholistic Woman says

    11/06/2015 at 3:21 pm

  20. courtney @ eat pray run dc says

    11/06/2015 at 4:36 pm

great tips – i can’t believe we’re basically at the holiday season already!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 6:26 pm

      It’s crazy! I’m not ready ?

  21. Jenn says

    11/06/2015 at 4:42 pm

I love the holidays, but yes it can get crazy busy, and you do have to find ways to keep yourself sane.

I love doing the Thanksgiving Day race, and I try to do a Christmas themed one, if I can. It’s good to keep me accountable over the season.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 6:27 pm

Yes it’s a fun way to features and stay active

  22. Haley says

    11/06/2015 at 5:51 pm

Power shopping sounds more like therapy to me. I enjoy any kind of shopping.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 6:28 pm

      Right there with you!

  23. Natalie says

    11/06/2015 at 7:49 pm

YES to all of this!! It can be such a crazy time of the year. I do have to say NO sometimes – otherwise it gets to be too much.
I love running on Thanksgiving Day! It’s such a nice feeling when you sit down to dinner that you had a great workout.
Turkey trots are super fun – we did one last year on Thanksgiving.
I try and do my shopping early – ha! I try!! I am going to be good this year and have it done by end of November. Fingers crossed…
    Have a great Friday!!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 11:16 pm

      Sounds like a great plan!

  24. Ariana says

    11/06/2015 at 8:09 pm

Awesome tips! I think it’s so important to learn to say “no” at any time of the year, but especially during the holidays. There are so many parties and events that can really throw a wrench in all your healthy and active plans!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 11:18 pm

Exactly! It’s so easy to over commit

  25. Lucie says

    11/06/2015 at 8:37 pm

You forgot the wine! Wine helps 🙂 For me, it’s important to get sleep, then I can cope with pretty much everything else! I love the idea of a Thanksgiving race too! Helps to keep you motivated!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 11:19 pm

Ha yes wine and coffee ?

  26. Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says

    11/06/2015 at 8:38 pm

I always wanted to do a Thanksgiving day race but because we travel on that day we have to be on the road early! Maybe someday we’ll get to stay home!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 11:19 pm

Ah yes it’s hard to travel that day

  27. Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says

    11/06/2015 at 8:43 pm

I do most of my holiday shopping on line. I just can’t stand the crowds. Plus it’s really nice to just browse on my laptop!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 11:19 pm

      Well that is true too!

  28. Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says

    11/06/2015 at 9:08 pm

Ha, the only powershopping I do is with my fingers on my laptop. I avoid the mall at all costs after November 10th, lol.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/06/2015 at 11:20 pm

Sometimes it’s fun to go check out what’s going on

  29. [email protected] says

    11/07/2015 at 4:24 am

That’s a great list with 5 important points. Signing up for a race does take a lot of pressure off that day and your Thanksgiving Dinner tastes even better after earning it:)

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/07/2015 at 8:52 am

      Yes I agree!

  30. jill conyers says

    11/07/2015 at 4:58 am

Isn’t it crazy we’re talking about the holidays. Great tips Deborah.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/07/2015 at 8:53 am

I know it always comes so fast!

  31. Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says

    11/07/2015 at 6:43 am

I love signing up for Holiday Races! I did my first Turkey Trot last year, and we ran the Christmas Town Dash down at Busch Gardens last year. No holiday races for me this year, but hopefully the baby and I will feel up for some walking around the neighborhood over Thanksgiving weekend.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/07/2015 at 8:54 am

Yes probably a good idea to skip it this year! You have lots to be thankful for this year

  32. Coco says

    11/07/2015 at 7:32 am

Great tips! I get annoyed that my Vivosmart doesn’t count my grocery shopping steps since my hands are still on the cart – but it does count my steps at Athleta. 😉

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/07/2015 at 8:55 am

Lol I did not know that about the tracker! More reason to shop!

  33. Celia at Chicago Jogger says

    11/07/2015 at 9:57 pm

These are great points.. I need to keep the “just say no” and meal planning tips in mind this season in particular!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/08/2015 at 3:53 pm

The just say no is really hard for me sometimes! It takes lots of pressure off though

  34. Jill @ Champagne for Everyday says

    11/08/2015 at 8:16 pm

Love the “Just Say No” tip. This is so important to remember, every day, but especially at this time of the year. Saying no gives you time to do what you actually want to do for the holidays. Great post!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/08/2015 at 9:02 pm

It can be really hard to say no can’t it?! I am so much happier now that I am learning how to

  35. Sandra Laflamme says

    11/08/2015 at 10:11 pm

Definitely gearing up for the marathon that is the holidays. We will all need these tips to stay sane! Some days it feels like it is so hard to fit everything in!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/09/2015 at 7:45 am

It is hard to fit everything in!!

  36. cheryl says

    11/09/2015 at 2:21 pm

I shop year round and have a closet full of stuff by this time…makes things much easier!
I am an educator and usually have some time off around the holidays so it seems like time slows down to where I can get some outside and “me” time balanced with the holiday commitments. I love this time of year actually!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/09/2015 at 3:32 pm

Me time is definitely important! How great that you are so organized way in advance with your gifts.
