I am asked often, what motivates me? While no one is motivated every single day to all the things, I find having a schedule and keeping it consistent is the biggest help to sticking to my goals. There are 5 main things/people that motivate me to keep chasing my 2023 race plans and goals.
5 Things that motivate me in 2023
What and who gets me excited to jump out of bed and chase my goals?
Running group
The women in my MRTT group motivate me every day. Knowing that someone is expecting me to show up is huge. It doesn’t matter if it’s cold or raining or crazy hot, someone is always willing and ready to meet up for a run. Watching them accomplish huge goals motivates me to keep after my own.
Races
Participating in running races is not for everyone of course. However, having a race on my schedule gives me a goal to towards and an end result to set my sights on.
Performance gains
Seeing improvement in my running performance is incredibly motivating. The last year, participating in the Team Wilpers Run Challenges have given me a new sense of purpose and feeling of accomplishment. Again, I thrive in group settings and really appreciate the “we are all in this together” feeling.
Peloton
What a community to be a part of! Not only do I have my own small “Peloton Squad” as motivation, I have millions of Peloton users to inspire me. What a sense of accomplishment to earn “badges” as I complete and hit different milestones.
Feeling stronger/healthier
That old saying, “health is wealth” is powerful for me. There is no better feeling (for me) to feel strong and healthy everyday. I want to model my healthy, active lifestyle to my kids. Most importantly, I want to be around as long as possible to be part of my children’s lives and hopefully my grandchildren to be.
These are my top 5 motivators in 2023. What are yours?

love all of these Deborah! for me having a community of people around me supporting each other is a massive motivator! what is better that supporting one another to reach our goals?
Deborah Brooks says
The community support is huge!
Jenny says
YES! My daughter was asking recently why I exercise, and one of the reasons I gave her is “I want to see my grandchildren graduate from college!” Ha, that’s ambitious (since I’m 56 and my kids are 20 and 14) but hey- you have to set big goals! And I agree- there’s no better feeling than being healthy and strong.
Deborah Brooks says
Why. Not set big goals!?
Michelle says
Yes to all of these! Though I do most of my running solo, I am definitely motivated by my virtual squad. And, does anything beat feeling strong and healthy?!
Deborah Brooks says
Nothing beats feeling strong and healthy. I do love having you as part of my virtual squad too
Zenaida Arroyo says
I love these! We have a few things in common that motivate us. Your family picture at the end is beautiful!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks just taken a few weeks ago!
Jenn says
I really need to figure out a running group/situation. We had one that would kind of travel the races together, but after the pandemic, it’s kind of disbanded. I have a great running buddy, but I need to figure out a bit of a community.
Deborah Brooks says
You must have an MRTT group near you? Have you looked?
Nicole @ Foodie Loves Fitness says
Love this! Having such a great fitness community is amazing. A big motivator is mine is also that I want to be a great example for my daughter!
Deborah Brooks says
that has always been great motivation for me as well!
