Happy Friday! Jumping in on the new Friday Five fun today with 5 Things to Love About Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays and it was hard to narrow it down to 5 reasons but here goes:
5 Things To Love About Thanksgiving
Fitness
I love a great race on Thanksgiving morning and I will be participating in the Bethesda Turkey Chase 10K. Not only is it a great way to get a head start on those extra calories I am going to consume but it’s the perfect way to destress and put me in a great mood for the next 4 items on my list. I will still never forget the time a guy in a full turkey suit with webbed feet blew right me. Humbling!
Family
We host Thanksgiving dinner at our house each year for around 13 family members. (Thus the need for item #1 lol). Since we just moved into our new house, I am excited to host my parents, sisters and niece and nephews. My daughter is coming home from college today for 9 nine days and I can’t wait to spend so much time with her.
Friends
This year one of my best girl friends will be joining us for dinner as well. Thanksgiving, to me, is a time to open your home and heart to friends and I am so glad she will be joining us. Having a friend at dinner also helps with reason #2 above 🙂
Food
Both my husband and I love to cook! As I’ve mentioned he is a total carnivore so he is in charge of the Turkey and some sort of meat. I will handle the veggie sides and dessert. We have a little bit of a bigger kitchen now so hopefully we can stay out of each other’s way!
Football
My husband and son are big football fans so you will find them switching around between exciting games all day long. It’s hard not to get in on the fun.
So tell me, what do you love about most about Thanksgiving? Racing on Thanksgiving? Are you a football family?

Family and friends tops my list – and sharing all the food with them! I never do a turkey trot because I always want to get the pies baking before everything else.
Deborah Brooks says
If you change your mind about the race, come join me!
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
Thanks giving is my favorite holiday. I could literally pass on Christmas and take a second thanksgiving!
Deborah Brooks says
That’s how I feel too! happy early Thanksgiving to you
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I love seeing my family on Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving and Christmas is really the only time my extended family gets together, so I am glad we have these holidays to make it happen!
Deborah Brooks says
OH that’s wonderful hope you all enjoy your time together this week!
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
Yay for Thanksgiving. It is such a nice time. We did a big party too. The Hubs fries a turkey and smokes the other. So at least that gets him OUT of my kitchen to do the rest. haha!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes that is a good plan! Enjoy your holiday 🙂
Kimberly Hatting says
All of the above! Our daughter (and her baby dog) are flying home tomorrow from Pennsylvania for an entire week! I won’t get to see them until I return from Oklahoma (very late on Sunday evening), but I’m looking forward to having her (and the college son) back home. I love all the Thanksgiving food…especially the leftovers. My favorite is the leftover turkey, served on bread with lots of gravy. ( I realize you probably have other favorite leftovers…but this one is ALL mine LOL)
Deborah Brooks says
Enjoy all the quality time with your kiddos next week!!
Divya @ Eat Teach Blog says
The thing I love most is NO WORK! WOohoooooo 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Well that is a great perk!! 😜 enjoy the day
Heather @ HeatherRunsFast.com says
I love spending time with my family and eating all the good food- specifically stuffing and pecan pie! I won’t be racing, but I have speedwork on the books, so I’ll definitely be running! Happy Thanksgiving 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Ooh speedwork I need to do more of that! Enjoy!
Nicola @ Running Happy says
Eating good food with friends and family sounds like a perfect holiday to me (although I’do take a pass on the football).
Deborah Brooks says
It does seem pretty perfect! Hope you have a fabulous Thanksgiving
Lesley says
I tried finding a turkey trot, but didn’t find anything interesting. If the weather’s good, I’ll run outside before wrapping things up and heading over to Friendsgiving. Knowing me, I won’t sleep in, so I can get my run done in the morning.
Deborah Brooks says
It’s becoming harder for me to sleep in so I figure I might as well!
[email protected] says
My sister and her kids will be visiting…. and my mom’s bday falls on thanksgiving this year…. it is my favorite holiday…. I won’t be racing that morning, but I’ll do a short run followed by a special gratitude yoga class before all the festivities begin… Have a great time!
Deborah Brooks says
Oh I like the idea of the gratitude yoga I will see if my spot has one
Anna @ Piper's Run says
I love time with family and food on Thanksgiving. Just being able to slow down and enjoy time together, fill our bellies and laugh. We also celebrate Thanksgiving in October (Canada) so it usually involves a a run as well 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Yes exactly the way I like to honor the day too
Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says
I’m gonna go a different direction and say I enjoy the break from work!
Mary Beth Jackson says
I swear no matter how big our kitchen was my hubby would insist on standing on top of me! LOL! I love it all! Run, eat, family and football!
Deborah Brooks says
That sounds familiar!!
Karen @ Fit in France says
No Thanksgiving in France, it is a US Holiday. Having said that, I am invited every year to a friend’s house and we celebrate, but it is not the same. No football.
Deborah Brooks says
It’s great you have the chance to get a taste of it! Enjoy
Marsha says
Our running club meets up on Thanksgiving morning to kick off the day. And then we have a local 5K/10K on Friday. We call it Burn It Off! lol! You can do one or both races. Give me anything but shopping to do on that day! lol! And yes, all the football!
Deborah Brooks says
I hate shopping on that day too!! Enjoy your run!!
Sarah- A Whisk and Two Wands says
Family is definitely number one for me! I will be getting my sweat on before though, and I do love the food too (well all the sides and pie), and football not so much.
Have fun at your 10K! Such a great way to work up a good appetite. 😉
Deborah Brooks says
Yes it’s great to get the early workout done that day for sure!
Ana says
I am racing on Thanksgiving! And I am so excited! A turkey Trot is the perfect way to start the holidays!!
I love spending time with my family in the kitchen too, cooking and talking!
Have a great race on Thanksgiving!
Deborah Brooks says
I agree to all of the above! Have a great day
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
Ahh I love family because we travel to see the in-laws next week, enjoy several days there then we all load up and head to Disney to finish out the weekend! Since I’ve become a runner, I usually do my long run on Thanksgiving in FL. This year I am considering a 6k Turkey Trot. 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
A 6k I have never heard of! Sounds fun
Tee says
So much to be thankful for! I’m not doing an official run on Thanksgiving but I’m going to do at least a short 5k run (possibly 10 but I’ll be honest, it probably won’t happen haha)
Deborah Brooks says
Ha ha what ever works for you!!
Marcia says
I agree with you, Thanksgiving is awesome! How fun to be hosting in your new home. Since we’re not hosting this year I’ll be trotting a 5k with my girls in the morning then heading to BIL’s house for dinner. Happy Thanksgiving!
Deborah Brooks says
sounds like a fun way to start the day!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I love running on Thanksgiving morning…the past few years I havent run because I have done a marathon the weekend before. But this year I plan to run! I did the Bethesda Turkey Chase a few years ago and it was a great way to start Thanksgiving!
Deborah Brooks says
It is a great race! Let me know if you decide to do it this year we can meet up
Rachel says
Great list. Friends and family for sure. And food. 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Yes to all!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I love getting together with my family. It’s fun to see everyone. I also like the food. My sister hosts (we have Christmas eve) and she’s an amazing cook!
Deborah Brooks says
Sounds perfect!!
Kristin says
I’ve always thought it would be fun to do a Turkey Trot. We’ve had Thanksgiving in Florida the last few years, so it’s been pretty small – just my parents, husband, and kids. I really love the day, though, it always feels so nice.
Deborah Brooks says
It really does! Hope you have a great one
Tara @ A Daily Dose of Fit says
My birthday is on Thanksgiving this year, so that’s my favorite thing this time around! haha!

It’s just my husband and I until the ex brings my son over. I fix a full meal, turkey and all but dessert.
Deborah Brooks says
Dessert is the best part!! 🙂
jill conyers says
My husband and I run Thanksgiving race every year. It’s one of my favorite traditions. More favorites. Family and pumpkin pie.
Deborah Brooks says
The Thanksgiving day race is one of my favorites too!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Not a football family. 13 people? OMG, I just have 6 coming & I feel like I’m losing my mind! But I do pretty much everything (although the husband does the stuffing).
The one benefit of hosting it, though, is now I get to do a Turkey trot. I always ran, but since it was a 90 minute drive (longer if we brought the dogs), racing was just too hard.
Deborah Brooks says
I think you will do just fine with the 6! You this 🙂
Pippa says
I’m doing my first ever thanksgiving this year! Going to an American friend’s flat (in London) and I’m so excited!
Deborah Brooks says
Oh how fun! Really hope you enjoy
Kristy from Southern In Law says
SO much to love! We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in Australia, however, my family celebrates Thanksgiving for Jesse so I love that we can all come together and eat delicious food!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes the important things!!

Deborah Brooks says

I hope you have a wonderful time with your daughter, family and friend!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks so much and I hope you are feeling better!
Allyson says
I have a 5k on Thanksgiving this year, and my husband does ALL the cooking on Thanksgiving. I’m super thankful for that!

Well that is something to be thankful for indeed!
