5 Races To Run In 2016

races|2106|calendar

I am finally narrowing down my race schedule for the year! I’ve decided that I really want to run some new races this year which gives me a few excuses to take some girls weekends too. I’d like to continue to mix up the types and distances of my races so here’s what I have so far.

Table of Contents

Toggle
  • Cherry Blossom 10 miler-
  • American Odyssey Relay-
  • Skirt Sports 13er-
  • Iron Girl Triathlon-
  • Hershey Half-
  • Have you done any of these races? What’s your goal race?

Cherry Blossom 10 miler-

Although not actually a new race for me, I had to drop out the past 2 years due to injury. I am ready to come back this April and rock the Cherry Blossom race right in my hometown area. I did not do any races longer than a 10k in 2015 so that my foot could heal. I am currently doing one of their virtual training plans and I am happy to be right on schedule for April 3rd.

American Odyssey Relay-

After doing the Ragnar relay twice, our Moms Do It All Night Long team was looking for a new adventure. We will be taking on the 200 mile American Odyssey relay April 29-30th starting in Gettysburg, PA. If the good times we had at Ragnar are any indication, this should be a blast as well. Many of my same team mates are returning but we also have lots of newbies joining us as well. I am really looking forward to this one!

American Odyssey relay race

Skirt Sports 13er-

I am pretty sure I am headed out to Boulder on June 12th to meet up with the other Skirt Sports ambassadors and join in on the Skirt Sports 13er race. I am a little nervous about the altitude issues so not sure if I can pull off a half out there. There is also a 5k so I have options. This is in my high probability right now if I can figure out the logistics. I hear Boulder is just gorgeous!

Iron Girl Triathlon-

I will be returning to the Iron Girl triathlon on August 7th  in Columbia, MD again this year. I am determined to conquer my fear of that lake and have a much better swim time. Looks like we’ve talked a few more of our friends into joining us this year too and this is my goal tri race this year.

Hershey Half-

I haven’t signed up quite yet but the Hershey half marathon is on my radar for October 16th. I will run for chocolate! I hear this is a great race and October is such a great running month. Thought it would be a fun girls weekend or I might even let the kiddos tag along with me.

How cool you are going to do the American Odyssey race. I had a friend do it a few yrs ago and he really enjoyed it. My sister and I have been talking about the Hershey race for yrs. Maybe this yr will be the one. How sweet!

We have the same goal tri. And issue with the daunting lake. We shall overcome! I’ve not done the Boulder Half but I have raced in CO a few times. The altitude definitely makes me feel winded. Just do what you can and enjoy the scenery.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/29/2016 at 9:01 am

We will both conquer that dumb lake!! You are doing a different IG race though I think?

One day I will run Cherry Blossom! I’ve always wanted to run that race!

It’s a great time of year to run in DC. Maybe next year? I will remind you about the lottery

  7. Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says

    01/29/2016 at 9:20 am

The Hershey Half sounds like a lot of fun! Its on my long list of races I’d like to run someday. And I’m glad to hear that you’re on track for this year’s Cherry Blossom 10 Miler. I’ve run it the past two years but am sitting this year out. I didn’t even attempt the lottery this year since I’m fairly certain I won’t be anywhere close to being ready to run a 10 miler in April.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/29/2016 at 5:45 pm

Let’s just say you ran it for me last year and I will run it for you this year! Hershey does sound fun I hope I can manage it

  8. Chaitali says

    01/29/2016 at 9:33 am

That relay sounds like a really cool adventure! And the Hershey race is definitely on my list to do some day. Though this year the Fall is going to be Rock and Roll Vegas for me 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/29/2016 at 5:45 pm

RnR Vegas was one of my favorites. I did it 2 years ago it’s quite the experience you will love it

I was in D.C. once at the time of the Cherry Blossom festival…. That would be a beautiful run… that’s making me most jealous on your list…. I am in awe of all of you doing triathlons, but I don’t really yet have any desire to do one. Other than LA marathon (now 15 days away….), I joined the lottery for NYC marathon…. running through NYC is a dream, so we’ll see.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/29/2016 at 5:47 pm

Wow 15 days away already? How exciting. A NY race is on my mind too just not sure which one.

    01/29/2016 at 10:33 am

I would love to run the Odyssey Relay. It’s definitely on my bucket list. I wish I wasn’t moving right smack in the middle of June… I really wanted to head out to Boulder too! I’m so jealous this is on your race calendar this year. So fun!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/29/2016 at 5:47 pm

Ah I am a little afraid of the altitude out there so we will see!

  11. Nicole @ Fitful Focus says

    01/29/2016 at 10:37 am

All of these races sound like a blast! The Cherry Blossom race is on my bucket list, and I’m going to look into the Hershey Half – that could be fun!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/29/2016 at 5:51 pm

The Hershey half does sound fun doesn’t it?!

  12. Holly says

    01/29/2016 at 11:03 am

Happy to be race 3/5 of these with you this year!! Maybe you could fly out to Washington State with me and run the Capital City Half in May? Why not make it 6?

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/29/2016 at 5:52 pm

Ha I don’t think I can pull that off this year too!

  13. Sarah says

    01/29/2016 at 11:57 am

Oh those look like some fun ones! Nice goal with the Tri, that is the one I don’t ever see myself doing only because of the swimming. Find one that swaps it for paddle boarding or kayaking and I’m there!
My husband and I want to do a half together this year, I have never done anything over a 10K and that was years ago as I usually “run” with the girls so he can do the longer races. He wants to do the one he did the full marathon last year for that he just loved in April but I’m worried that is too soon as I don’t want to train solo and with him traveling for work here and there and our families schedules might be hard to time all of our runs together. We will see though… maybe if he gets my treadmill for my b-day, except that instead I am now taking the family with my to Expo and Disney so that probably won’t happen. 😉

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/29/2016 at 5:53 pm

The swimming is always the hardest mentally for me. I swim way more than that each week in the pool but come race day I get freaked out!

  14. Sharon says

    01/29/2016 at 12:23 pm

Sounds like a great schedule! I’ve done the Cherry Blossom run and it’s a good one. Hope the blossoms will be in bloom when you run it! Boulder sounds like so much fun!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/29/2016 at 5:54 pm

Boulder does sound fun I just hope I can run in the altitude there.

  15. Pam says

    01/29/2016 at 5:04 pm

You have some nice races on your calendar for 2016. My goal race is the London Marathon, but I would love to run the Cherry Blossom 10 miler some day. Running in DC is always really fun and a spring race there would be great.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/29/2016 at 6:01 pm

Spring races in DC are great hope you get to join me one year! London would also be kind of cool indeed 🙂

Oooh-i heard the Columbia Tri is hilly 🙁 scared me away-i am a punk!

Oooh Hersey! I would totally run for Chocolate!!

    • Deborah Brooks says

I’d love to do the Cherry Blossom 10 miler! The 13er would be fun to meet all the other bloggers. And the Hershey race? Say no more…

    • Deborah Brooks says

You should enter the lottery next year for CB!

      Sure the more the merrier!

  22. Kim Hatting says

    01/30/2016 at 1:20 am

I’d LOVE to do the Cherry Blossom 10-miler!! Not only do I have DC on my bucket list (for ANY race), I like the 10-mile distance because it’s not as far as a half (so it’s do-able for a “tempo” speed race),andt it’s farther than a 10K, so there’s that challenge of a longer distance. You have a lot of great things on your calendar!!!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2016 at 7:23 pm

I live a 10 m too for all the same reasons. You feel like it’s a goal you can train for but does not take over your life. DC has some great races

  23. jill conyers says

    01/30/2016 at 4:58 am

I would love to run any of these races.

    • Deborah Brooks says

  24. Kristen Chang says

I’ve done the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile and it was an incredibly awesome experience (helps that I had a great race and PR’d!) I haven’t done any of the Iron Girl races but have family near Columbia, so perhaps I’ll have to check it out!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2016 at 7:33 pm

Oh you should! It’s a fun all female race to do

  25. Michelle @ Movin' it with Michelle says

    01/30/2016 at 10:41 am

They all sound like fun races! I always wanted to do the Cherry Blossom race! I was stationed in D.C. for 3 years, from ’93-’96 and always LOVED when it was Cherry blossom season.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2016 at 7:27 pm

It’s a great race to do and the weather is usually wonderful

  26. Mary Beth Jackson says

    01/30/2016 at 2:50 pm

Great choices! I love adding new runs to the line up! The Hersey run sounds fun or yummy! Those are all new races to me!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2016 at 7:31 pm

It does sound fun doesn’t it?

  27. Coco says

    01/30/2016 at 3:35 pm

I love Bolder! I think if you can arrive a day or two early you’ll be OK.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2016 at 7:32 pm

We shall see! It scares me

  28. Akaleistar says

    01/30/2016 at 8:13 pm

All of these races sound awesome, but the Hershey half marathon sounds like a must 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

I really hope I can pull that one off!

  29. Natalie says

The Cherry Blossom 10 miler sounds awesome!! I would love to run that someday.
Boulder is so gorgeous – you are going to have the best time!!
Such fun races! I am happy your foot has healed – it’s going to be a great year 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/31/2016 at 8:26 pm

Boulder is gorgeous it’s the altitude I am afraid of!

  30. Lauren says

    01/31/2016 at 4:03 pm

I think I am doing the Hershey half too:) Lots of great races on your line up!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/31/2016 at 8:27 pm

Oh really!? Let me know as we get closer and we can meet up 🙂

  31. Kelli says

    01/31/2016 at 8:07 pm

Wow, you have such a fun schedule! Ugh, kicking myself that there’s no way to coordinate doing one of these. Family vacation the weekend of Irongirl and the Hershey Half is the weekend before Ironman NC 70.3. If you want a place to stay or to grab a bite to eat on your way to or from Hershey just let me know!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/31/2016 at 8:30 pm

Oh too bad you can’t join me at Hershey and yes I will keep that in mind for sure. Ok now I have to sign up right?

  32. Debbie @ Deb Runs says

    01/31/2016 at 8:59 pm

I used to run Cherry Blossom every year, but haven’t for several. I liked it because it was a pretty fast course back in the day before it got so crowded. Or did I get slower? 🙂

I used to live just south of Boulder. It’s gorgeous out there!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/01/2016 at 7:52 am

It got way more crowded for sure. One year I swear I was running in place for a mile.

  33. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says

    02/02/2016 at 10:02 am

Great racing schedule! I never heard of American Odyssey and now I wish I had…looks like such a fun experience! I’ll see you at Cherry Blossom 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/02/2016 at 12:38 pm

I can’t wait to see you at Cherry Blossom! I had signed up for one of their virtual plans which has me running 10 miles this weekend! That seems crazy doesn’t it since the race is in 2 months. I am doing a 10k race instead. Are you following one of their plans?

  34. Sonia says

    02/02/2016 at 11:08 am

You have a fun race schedule. I ran the Cherry Blossom a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I ran the Irongirl Half in Columbia and that will have a special place in my heart because it was my first half. I’d like to do a tri some day. Good luck!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/02/2016 at 12:46 pm

It’s really hilly over there in Columbia isn’t it? That’s the reason I have not done the half there! iron girl is a great race come join me

      • Sonia says

        02/02/2016 at 1:53 pm

I wish! I’m in Texas now so I’m not sure the next time I’ll be back on the East Coast. Columbia was hilly, for sure.

        • Deborah Brooks says

          02/02/2016 at 4:06 pm

Ah didn’t realize you lived that far!

  35. Patty says

The Cherry Blossom looks amazing. It’s on the “someday” list! Good luck!

    • Deborah Brooks says

It’s a great DC race to do for sure. Hope you are able to run it one year too.

I’ve done Cherry Blossom once. It’s a great race and a great course, but I’m getting a bit bored with the same old courses! Very cool that you will be going to Boulder. You’ve been to CO many times, but after living there, make sure you get out there several days before to adjust!!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/03/2016 at 8:16 am
