5 Indoor Workouts That Make You Sweat

  • Share
  • Tweet

You may have noticed or heard me whine about that I haven’t been running much lately due this nagging case of Plantar Fasciitus. This week I am feeling like it is finally getting better so there is hope. This have given me a new found appreciation for all of the indoor workouts I can do. I’ve always been a huge fan of cross training, so when I saw that this week’s topic the The Friday Five linkup was Indoor Workouts, I was excited to participate. I love linking up with Courtney, Mar & Cynthia it’s such a great way to discover new blogs.

1. Spinning– I’ve always loved spinning! I’ve written about the great benefits here before. There is something about the neon lights, loud music and the way the group energy is contagious. Lately, I’ve been going 2-3 times a week and I am loving the results. Almost makes me want to go back to teaching it again. A bunch of my MRTT running buddies also take classes with me so I  don’t feel so left out not running.

2. Kick Boxing- For the last few years, I’ve been enjoying doing one on one kickboxing sessions with my trainer. It’s really an amazing cardio workout and quite the sweat fest. When else can you punch and kick someone and know that they won’t do it back? Plus I feel awfully bad ass in my pink boxing gloves!

3. Swimming– After 4 years I decided to go back to doing Tri races this year. I was really into them for a while but then kind of got burnt out and wanted to focus on longer running races. Ironically, having the foot injury right now, has set me up for some great tri training. So I am back in the pool!

4. Hot Yoga-I love Hot Yoga especially in the winter time. I love dripping with sweat and feeling completely spent. I really find I get a great stretch in my hamstrings, back and feet in a way I don’t get while stretching on my own. My fave yoga spot, Core Power, also has hot yoga sculpt classes with weights. Killer Workouts!

5. Solid Core- I’ve recently discovered this class and wow did it kick my butt! Anything that kicks my butt makes me want to try it again. I felt my abs for days. It’s a Pilates reformer on steroids. If you missed my recent review, check it here. I dragged along some of my MRTT buddies to check it out. Don’t let their smiles fool you-They were cursing me for days! I’m looking forward to going back again soon.

What indoor workouts are you loving? Will you keep doing them in the Spring?

Spin and hot yoga… how I love thee. Thank goodness it has been warm enough this winter for us to run outside. Otherwise I’d be SOL because I don’t have any memberships!

ha ha yes! It’s been a good month for me not to be able to run much bc it’s been not so nice out around here.

Sweating while swimming is the strangest thing to me but that is one of the BEST workouts. You do not realize how hard you are working until you stop and feel yourself breathing heavy!!! Great post Deborah!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 12:37 pm

Thanks! I know at first I didn’t believe swimming was hard bc I couldn’t feel the sweat but it is a killer! I am starving after I swim

I took a spinning class last night for the first time in MANY years and I can’t believe I waiting so long; it was a BLAST! I think this is going to be a regular thing for me now, and I definitely think it will be a great addition to my training. This is the first I’ve heard of Solid Core, but it sounds terrifyingly amazing! I will definitely keep an eye out for this one. Thanks so much and I hope you have a great weekend!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 12:41 pm

Spinning can be totally kick ass! I love the sweat and if you have a great instructor they can be so motivating. Enjoy getting your spin on.

  8. Annmarie says

    01/30/2015 at 9:21 am

I have not heard of Solid Core and am terrible at yoga & swimming but I do miss boxing (I used to be in a club in college) and I NEED to get back to another spin class!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 12:41 pm

Wow you were in a boxing club? I don’t think I would like it if someone tried to hit me back 🙂

  9. Chaitali says

    01/30/2015 at 9:43 am

I’m glad your foot is on the way to feeling better! This is such a great variety of indoor workouts that you do 🙂 I have to branch out some more and try these. I’ve still never tried a spin class.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 12:43 pm

What? You have to try a spin class-they are so great! Thanks my foot is feeling a little better plan to try to test it out tomorrow.

I love hot yoga though I don’t get to do it as often as I like. Here in Chattanooga we have heated power yoga classes which are amazing 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 12:45 pm

I love heated power yoga and i find it really is a great compliment to running. I don’t get there as often as I should either.

  11. Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says

    01/30/2015 at 10:27 am

Ever since the weather has been so cold I’ve been wanting to try hot yoga but I cannot find any in my area. I will have to look more into this.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 12:47 pm

I hope you find a place. It’s the best in the cold weather and I think a great compliment to running.

  12. Nicole @ Fitful Focus says

    01/30/2015 at 11:46 am

I’ve been doing CrossFit lately and really like it! I’m also a fan of treadmill running when it’s just too darn cold or icy out.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 12:47 pm

I’ve actually not tried crossfit yet-kind of scares me a little.

  13. Sara @ Lake Shore Runner says

    01/30/2015 at 12:06 pm

I hate a good ab workout during the workout but absolutely love a good ab workout after. I love when it hurts to laugh. I would love to try that Solid Core class

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 12:48 pm

That’s exactly how it felt for days! I could feel it deep in there which is hard to get for me from traditional ab exercises.

  14. Kristy @Runaway Bridal Planner says

    01/30/2015 at 12:11 pm

Great ideas! Kickboxing has always been something I’ve always wanted to try, but never have. I don’t know why, but it just sounds like a lot of fun!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 12:50 pm

It’s the most fun workout that I do! Hope you get to try it 🙂

  15. Jenny @ TurtleStride says

    01/30/2015 at 12:53 pm

I haven’t tried Spin, although it’s all the rage. I do enjoy yoga but I have yet to give Hot Yoga a try. I’ll have to see out a class during our next winter blast!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 5:34 pm

I really enjoy hot yoga and find I get a great stretch from it.

Spin was my first fav group fitness class! Loved the music and neon lights! Lately I’ve been doing T25 and PiYo as my indoor workouts. Starting next week I’ll be adding more yoga! 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 5:40 pm

Totally off topic, but where did you get that Tweet box in your post (for lack of a better term?). Is it a plug in? A widget? I want that for my blog, but don’t even know what to search for. Thanks in advance!

I need to get to Solid Core, but I’m afraid I’ll love it and that’s not a habit I can afford LOL. Good for you for making the best of your injury.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 5:45 pm

Thanks! I’d still rather be running with you but at least I am keeping in shape. I am trying to meet Coco there next week I will let you know and maybe you can join us.

  22. Jess @hellotofit says

    01/30/2015 at 7:39 pm

Sorry to hear you’re battling PF. When I worked at a physical therapy clinic, I remember that being a particularly painful therapy for patients! I love teaching spin – it gets me the sweatiest, out of all the classes, and also Zumba 🙂 happy Friday!!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 9:18 pm

Thanks! It’s getting better but so frustrating. Spinning is great I feel like I am staying shape while not running.

    01/30/2015 at 8:25 pm

Great list. Some things on here to definitely try sometime. Do enjoy some indoor swimming.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/30/2015 at 9:19 pm

The class I’m going to on Monday utilizes a contraption that looks very much like the one in your Solid Core pic! I’m excited to try it out!

ooh have fun! It was really challenging 🙂

  25. Daisy @ Fit Wanderlust Runner says

I have also been suffering from really bad plantar fasciitis. It is so uncomfortable. I am really enjoying spinning in the mean time. I think I am going to have to do some swimming next just to spice things up.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/31/2015 at 8:20 am

It’s really annoying isn’t it?! Swimming has been a nice distraction. Hope we are both back to running pain free soon 🙂

Yes to Core Power Yoga! One of my goals this month was to get back into the pool 1x/week..not successful this month… hoping February I will form a habit.

    • Deborah Brooks says

Love all of these workouts! I am a hot yoga/vinyasa girl, especially in the winter! This january I just completed a 30 day challenge of only hot yoga and while I miss running, it was a nice break and great to get into a hot room and sweat! A perfect break from winter (even though our winter is a joke compared to yours!) I also love Spinning and kickboxing, especially Turbo Kick Box! I haven’t tried or heard of Solid Core yet- need to check it out!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/31/2015 at 2:44 pm

I’ve really been enjoying hot yoga too and I really feel a lot better when I do it. I miss running too!

    01/31/2015 at 2:41 pm

Love this! So many of my workouts are solo because of my schedule. But yes to spinning/trainer, hot yoga, swimming. Kickboxing looks awesome! I took a class way back in grad school and thought it was a lot of fun. How do you have time to fit all these great workouts in?!?

    • Deborah Brooks says

      01/31/2015 at 2:46 pm

I have no idea how I fit in all in! Now that my kids are older I have more time to do my stuff while they are out and about.

  29. Kim says

    01/31/2015 at 10:26 pm

I keep saying that I’m going to try spinning – so far I haven’t done it though.
I do like working out indoors though – mostly at home!!

  30. Stephanie (@FitMomTraining) says

    01/31/2015 at 10:31 pm

Swimming was a life saver when I had tendonitis. I still love it. Lately, I’m loving cross-training at the gym in a class setting. Lots of variety and intensity that keeps my body moving.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/02/2015 at 8:37 am

I have liked the swimming and the cycling and I hope to keep it up once I am running again. I do miss running though!

    • Deborah Brooks says

We do have lots of fun choices here. They know people will pay anything and try anything right?!

  32. Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says

    02/01/2015 at 6:02 pm

I do love spinning and indoor cycling. I don’t belong to a health club and I couldn’t find anywhere that offered spin classes without a membership. So I did a computrainer class for cross training, 2 winters in a row. It was hard but great. I met a really good friend there, who at the time was training for an Ironman. She’s the one who really lit the endurance fire in me and got me to do my first marathon. What can I say?

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/02/2015 at 8:31 am

I’ve heard those computrainer classes are great and hard. I may check those out at some point too!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/03/2015 at 7:13 am

I am excited that I am getting back to tri races too just wish I didn’t have the injury that has kept me from running for 6 weeks. I am hoping I am over the worst of it.
