Perhaps you saw my numerous IG posts showcasing all the yummy food we ate in Italy last month. If not, no worries! Today, I am giving you a peek into my top 5 foods I ate this summer while traveling in Italy.
5 Best Foods We Ate in Italy
Granita
If you are not familiar, Granita is a popular treat on the Amalfi Coast and all over Italy. It’s a fresh, frozen, lemon treat which originated in Sicily. Think a less sweet “slurped” or “Icee”. As it was so hot on our visit, we enjoyed these refreshing treats almost daily while strolling around.
Some of the restaurants served them in lemons like this.
Pizza
Well naturally, Pizza! While all the pizza was pretty delicious in Italy, our most favorite pizza was the traditional Roman version from Pizzeria de Baffetto in Rome near the Piazza Navona. This thin, crispy, very traditional Roman pizza is a must try. The line out the door says it all.
Caio é Pepe
Worlds apart from any Caio é Pepe I’ve ever had in the states, the traditional Italian version is to die for. It is so simple to make and yet, so complex in it’s taste. We researched many plates of pasta 🍝 ha ha to find the absolute best. Our pick: Roscioli Salumeria
In fact, this is our most favorite restaurant in Rome by far. We also took our cooking class at their other location.
Fresh Mozzarella
If you are a cheese lover, the fresh mozzarella in Italy is going to be a game changer for you. Not sure if it is the fresh milk, the process, the freshness or all of the above, but the fresh mozzarella is to die for. We again sampled cheese in numerous locations over our 3 weeks of travel. Our pick for the most fresh and delicious is also Roscioli Salumeria (where we ate twice because it was that good).
Gelato
There is “ice cream” and there is gelato. Also, there is gelato and there is real, fresh Italian Gelato. As someone who is not really an “ice cream person”, the gelato at Frigidarium won me over. It won me over numerous times actually. The line out the door all day and night is a good indication that you are in the right place. It’s well worth the wait. You will find it right near the famous Piazza Navona. PS it is next door to the pizza place above-how convenient!
As you can see, we enjoyed all the Italian food to the fullest! It was worth every bite! Save this post for your next trip to Italy.

So good. I remember having some of the best food in Italy. Everything was so fresh and so delicious. And I ate gelato every day, without fail.
Cacio y pepe is one of my favorite pastas.

Granita is the best in the really hot weather they can have there. And a total yes and amen to real fresh mozzarella! If you can’t get good mozzarella at home, see if you can get burrata, that’s usually good also far from Italy.
Deborah Brooks says
We do have burrata here as well I just don’t think it’s as good as the real thing!
