So, I woke up a few weeks ago and realized that the Sprint Triathlon I had signed up for many months ago was in 4 weeks. Oops! In an ideal world, I would have started training back in February but life kind of got in the way this year. I also put all of my efforts into training for Cherry Blossom. So what did I do?
Completely freak out I devised a down and dirty, basic 4 Weeks To A Sprint Triathlon plan.
4 Weeks To A Sprint Triathlon
I will preface this by saying that I am not a triathlon coach. (I do have a run coach cert) I have however, completed many sprint triathlons over the past 12 years. If I had the luxury of more time, I would add in specific drills and speed work for all 3 disciplines. (See swim workouts for runners) I would build up more slowly over a period of 8-10 weeks.
Since I only have 4 weeks to get it done, I designed this plan to keep me on schedule and get me ready to tackle the sprint triathlon in 4 weeks. If you are already running multiple times per week and you are comfortable enough on your bike or in a pool, you can do this.
The swim portion of triathlons seems to cause athletes the most anxiety. Swim distances are short in a Sprint Triathlon (usually between 300 to 700 meters). Many early season Sprint Triathlons offer pool swims which are an even better way for beginners to try a tri.
Even if you are not ready to take on a triathlon race yet, adding in cross training is a great way to get in shape for summer. After a very long winter, I look forward to mixing up my training a bit with shorter runs and longer bike and swim sessions. I am always in better shape when I do more than just run.
Not ready to commit to all 3 sports? Here is another run and bike workout that I love/hate. It’s harder than it looks.
Tell me: Doing any triathlon races this year? Do you like to mix up your training with some cycling or swimming?
