How To Organize An Unofficial Beer Mile Run

07/21/2017 by Deborah Brooks

Perhaps you’ve noticed the rising popularity of Beer Mile Runs? Seems as though running and beer drinking are quite pairing these days with many races offering post race beers. Our MRTT group planned a Beer Mile run last night as a going away party for one of our long time members. It was such a fun and different event for us and I thought it would be interesting to share the details with you all. Perhaps you might decide to Organize your own Unofficial Beer Mile Run.

How to organize an unofficial beerm mile run

First a bit of info on a traditional Beer Mile Run:

The most common format of a Beer Mile Run is for each participant to drink a full sized beer, run 1/4 mile and then repeat 3x for a total of 4 beers consumed and 1 mile run. The beer has to stay in for it to count i.e. no throwing up. There are actually stats and records for official beer mile runs. Men’s Journal even has a real training plan. Go figure!

Beer mile run

For purposes of our Unofficial Beer Mile Run, we have a few categories:

We are using a lap around a neighborhood street that is about 1/3 of a mile. 3 laps around equaling about a mile.

-Traditional Beer Mile (3 beers over 1 mile)

-Relay Team (3 runners each drinking 1 beer for a lap)

-Lightweight (drink 1/3 of a beer each lap for a total of 1 full beer run)

-Virgin Runner (drink sparkling water at each lap)

Some people are just not beer drinkers. Me included!

Intrigued? Think your group of runner friends might like to try it out? Here’s 5 Tips on How to Organize an Unofficial Beer Mile Run.

  1. ย Decide on a venue that is feasible and easy to measure. Using a track would be ideal however, most school tracks do not allow alcohol usage. Neighborhood loops are great venues.
  2. Offer options for all of your runners so everyone who wants to can participate. (See above)

3.Pick an official timer and a few facilitators to keep track of timing and handing out beers/beverages.

4. Make it full blown party! We had a huge BBQ dinner and send off for our friend afterwards.

5.Have Fun! Remember it’s not a serious “run”.

Meet Deborah

Hi I'm Deborah! I spend my days successfully raising a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. I am a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, I've always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, I started my own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 700 members. I've met so many amazing women who inspire me daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find me running with my crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked me into. I love to keep up to date on new running & fitness trends. I definitely choose my running gear based on color and love to express my fashion sense while exercising.

Running Bad Habits I Need To Break ASAP

Throughout my running “career”/ “history” I have practiced what I would refer to as “good habits” regarding running and recovery. Now is not one of those times. I have fallen into some, what I consider to be, running bad habits. I am baring my soul (and soles) here in an attempt to break these habits. […]
