You may be one of Cassey Ho’s over 2 million youtube subscribers or a fan of her uber popular “Pop Pilates” DVD series or perhaps seen the viral video she recently produced in response to what she called “cyber bullying”. In the fitness world, it’s hard not to run into her name so I was really intrigued to take a look inside her new book, Hot Body Year Round
I admit I usually skip the introduction of a book, however I began reading Cassey’s account of her childhood and the stresses she faced as a first generation Vietnamese-American. Her family was extremely traditional and pushed her into a pre-med program. She found herself unhappy & unfulfilled turning to Pilates and exercise as an outlet. She ended up dropping out of college much to her parent’s dismay to follow her dream. She goes into much more detail and I found it truly fascinating to read.
Throughout the book, Cassey shares her thoughts (“A note from Cassey”) on topics such a confidence, emotional eating & self image. She is brutally honest and it seems as though you may be sneaking a peek into her diary of sorts.
The book is divided into seasons as she shares her favorite foods from each time of the year. Her eating approach is nothing new but an emphasis on eating local, seasonal vegetables and fruits while avoiding processed foods. Each section offers simple recipes with few ingredients. Many are vegetarian or vegan. She does list calories but that is not her focus.
Cassey’s exercises are arranged seasonally as well and appear to be geared towards all levels of exercisers. Her photos and descriptions are quite good so that anyone should be able to follow her prompts. She doesn’t repeat the moves in more than one season however, I don’t know why you couldn’t mix them up to keep it fresh.
The workouts are based off of traditional yoga and pilates moves. All are performed with just her own body weight thus offering a no impact, do anywhere routine. She does offer a few new twists on some old classic moves. They can be done alone for those looking for a lower impact alternative or added to any athlete’s routine to offer additional toning and shaping. Cassey offers almost daily video workouts, with her motivating cheerleader persona, on her facebook page which are a nice compliment to the book.
She has a sweet, honest approach and it is easy to see why she has become the youtube darling that she is. Cassey’s peppy realistic approach is refreshing and genuine. Her book is currently available for approx. $10 on Amazon (affiliate link).
“Cassey’s blog, blogilates.com, was named the top healthy living blog by Fitness Magazine in 2012 and, recently, she took home the Streamy Award for Best Health and Wellness Channel for 2014. Greatist named her one of the Top 25 Most Influential People in the world in Health and Fitness for 2015. She has been featured on The Dr. Oz Show, Extra, The Steve Harvey Show, The Wendy Williams Show and in Shape, Fitness, Cosmopolitan, and Seventeen magazines, among many others.” (Penguin Random House)
(I was provided a copy of Hot Body Year Round by Blogging For Books in exchange for a review however all opinions are my own.)
